Golf…… Burda Style

Last month I bought my first ever burda style magazine and bravely set about tracing these shorts It hasn’t taken me almost a month to trace and sew the, it’s taken that long to update my blog! The tracing wasn’t too bad and I’m getting the hang of adding seam allowances.  I have one of these which really helps.  The shorts came together in no time and I love the contrasting spotty fabric. My only disappointment was that the fabric didn’t have enough body to hold the shape and they were a bit flappy when I was playing golf. They also seemed to get bunched up between my legs as I walked, but my playing partners said they still looked ok from the back and no one could tell. I think they’d look good in light weight denim or a stretch cotton sateen. I cheated a little with the waist band as I wanted to finish them quickly so I could wear them for golf. I inserted the zip but instead of adding a proper …

Crikey!! Where do I start!!

I’ve finally done it! Will it be the best £4.99 ever spent? Or will I just end up drooling over the photos? I’ve bought my first Burda Style magazine and am just about to trace off the pieces for these shorts….. My Yasmin Yoke skirt pattern is the only one I’ve used where I’ve needed to add seam allowances, but as I have 3 wonderful skirts to show for my trouble the memories have disappeared from my mind. Mmmm…probably not dis-similar to child birth! So here we go, let’s find the pieces….. Gosh! Hopefully in the near future I’ll be able to show off my spotty version…. Here’s my fabric for a hopefully wearable muslin – it’s dark cerise pink but doesn’t show up too well in the photograph. Wish me luck! Hope I get to the cutting out stage. At least that will mean I have the pieces!!

TMS – Pants Challenge

Phew! Talk about Cutting it fine.  February’s challenge for The Monthly Stitch is to make pants. Or trousers, or slacks depending whereabouts in the world you might be. So here’s my moleskin Manhattan Skinny Bitch Curvy Chick trousers. I bought the PDF version of the pattern for $12 (about £7) as I didn’t want to wait for it to be shipped from the USA. This pattern company designs patterns for petites – I’m 5’4″ so not too small but not tall either. Neither am I a skinny bitch or a curvy chick, but hey ho, I loved the free Tonic T pattern that I made here, and here for my mum in law, so thought I’d given the Manhattan pants a whirl. Sticking together the PDF pattern pieces wasn’t the easiest of tasks. Not sure if it was my printer but I lost some of the lines near the edge of the paper and had to draw them in where I thought they might go….. Once I started sewing they were a dream to put together. The instructions …

Refashioning my Diesel Jeans #1

I splashed out on a pair of Diesel Jeans around 5 years ago. They were quite low rise and at the time looked great. But over the last year or 2 my tummy has grown a couple of inches and the jeans are now not so flattering and have been laying dormant in my bottom drawer. During the last week I’ve given a lot of thought to my sewing plans for 2014.  As I have joined the RTW Fast I think I need to put more thought how I spend my sewing time.  Usually I’ll knock together something easy and quick but it won’t necesarily be a wardrobe staple. I’ve now decided that I will: Take my time planning every garment. Make a muslin (if it’s a new pattern). Try not to buy any fabric – use fabric and notions from my stash, or dye fabric/clothes. If I wake up with the urge to sew and have nothing planned and ready to sew, I will make a bag with scraps from my stash – hoping …

Vogue 8757 & SBCC Tonic T Shirt

Hi World (I say that as I’m still shocked by all you amazing people from around the globe who read my blog). Last night I was twiddling my thumbs watching nothing on telly. It was around 6:30pm. My hubby was asleep on the sofa, we’d been to his uncle’s funeral and he’d had 4 pints.  Not a lot for most men, but Craig’s not really a drinker so it acts like an anesthetic on him!  Rather than watch nothing on tv I thought I’d have a look in my stash and see if there was anything I could use to make a wearable toile using one of my new patterns – trousers from Vogue 8757: I found some slinky jersey that my mum bought for me from Leeds Market. I had 1.5m so just had enough. I laid it out and tried to figure which was the right way up……I couldn’t decide so thought it doesn’t really matter, if I can’t tell when it’s laid out then I’m sure no one notice when it’s made …
