Sewing with leather….
Has anyone any tips for sewing with leather? I picked up 4 pieces yesterday and am going to try and make a bag. I got it from Fabworks in Dewsbury, they sell it at £10 per kg which I thought was a good price. They also sell bigger pieces at £12/kg. This shop is amazing and well worth a visit if you’re not too far away.
I’ve bought some leather needles, well not leather, but you know what I mean!
I need a foot for my machine and am wondering whether to buy a roller one or an ultra guide one.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The Boxy Dopp Kit
I’ve made it, and I’m so excited! I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever made and it’s not even for me. It’s for Martin to take to America on Tuesday, all wrapped up ready to open on his birthday on Thursday.
I found the pattern and instructions on a great website I stumbled across – The Cottage Mama. I could spend hours brousing her site, there’s so many inspirational projects.
I made one or two changes to the instructions, but only small. I used a different fabric to line it with, it’s a white mesh, similar to what you’d find inside men’s swimming shorts.

I also top stitched along the side of the zipper, as I thought the lining may get caught in the zipper.

I did lots of overlooking and it looks really tidy inside.

I feel I may be taking a break from making clothes and start my Christmas sewing….
Here’s a few more pix before I wrap it up…….

Not A Day Goes By……..
Not a day goes by, or even an hour, when I’m not thinking about my next project. Today whilst in bed (3pm – I’m on nights and should really sleep until around 5pm but the sewing clogs in my brain had started to turn and I was wide awake) I was thinking of getting up and having ago at my first Sorbetto. But then I remembered it’s my best buddy’s birthday on Thursday and I had intended to make him a little something.
Here’s me & Martin……..fun times.. Usually involving alcohol of some description!

He’s off to America on Tuesday (3rd time since June – lucky guy!) to see him partner David, so I need to work fast so it can be packed in his suitcase on Monday night. I had a look on the internet to find instructions to make him a wash bag and found this….
Details can be found on this link – the cottage mama – it’s a fab site!
I have some fabric left over from making a headboard for Harrison’s bed earlier this year and thought it would be just right – New York City scenes. I popped it in the washer, had to wait a very long 40 minutes, pegged it out then went on a hunt to buy a 14 inch zipper. I’d only got a pink one and didn’t think that would match!

So, now I’m home I’ve only an hour before I have to go to work. Saturday nights on the ambulances are not something I look forward to! Quick shower in order, will cut my fabric out and then it’s all ready for when I get up tomorrow.
Vogue 8757 & SBCC Tonic T Shirt
Hi World (I say that as I’m still shocked by all you amazing people from around the globe who read my blog).
Last night I was twiddling my thumbs watching nothing on telly. It was around 6:30pm. My hubby was asleep on the sofa, we’d been to his uncle’s funeral and he’d had 4 pints. Not a lot for most men, but Craig’s not really a drinker so it acts like an anesthetic on him! Rather than watch nothing on tv I thought I’d have a look in my stash and see if there was anything I could use to make a wearable toile using one of my new patterns – trousers from Vogue 8757:

I found some slinky jersey that my mum bought for me from Leeds Market. I had 1.5m so just had enough. I laid it out and tried to figure which was the right way up……I couldn’t decide so thought it doesn’t really matter, if I can’t tell when it’s laid out then I’m sure no one notice when it’s made up.

I cut a size 16, I’m a UK 12 (RTW) and can’t get my head round having to make clothes much bigger!
There wasn’t much to the pattern, just front, back & rear facings.
I stitched all the seams with a lightening stitch then overlocked the raw edges together. The front gathered part went together really simple and everything matched up as I sailed through the instructions.

By 9pm I’d almost finished, just as Craig came bleary eyed into the kitchen. He couldn’t believe I’d made them whilst he was have a nap on the couch.
Then……this morning, after wearing my new slinky trousers for the school run, coffee with my mum, and then to my sisters I dashed home to make a new top to go with my super duper trousers – I’d just chucked an old jumper on and boots for the school run. My sis’ said I needed to dress them up.
I decided on the Skinny Bitch Curvy Chick tonic T Shirt. Description from the website:
The Tonic T-shirt is the cure for wardrobe woes. It is the staple item that works as a base for any outfit that needs some new life. This T-shirt is specifically made for petites, so no more t-shirts that can double as a tunic or hang out below a cardigan. Neckline is sexy, but not so much as you have to be in fear of bending over. All secure here.
Make it in your basic color palette as an easy layering piece or make it in that special knit fabric that will add a pop to your wardrobe.
*Skill Level- Easy

Click on the link above to see their website. The Tonic T shirt is FREE, I’ve already made one in some brown shiny ribbed fabric and got some great comments when I wore it.
So, I dug out a metre of thick slightly stretch lace fabric that I’d bought a while ago on ebay. About £3 I think. Down each selvedge the lace had a scalloped edge so I cut along the shape.
It turned out great, I’d never done that before, I was able to use the scalloped edging for the bottom and the sleeves.
I made the t shirt in no time, especially as I’d no need to do any hemming!
I’ve now just returned from my mums after a quick photo shoot so I can share my new outfit with you. Think I’m going to wear it next Tuesday night when it’s our ladies presentation night at the golf club. I’ve no prizes to collect but I’m taking over as the new lady captain..Yikes!! Sleepless nights ahead and less time for sewing.
So here’s my little photo shoot courtesy of my mum. Excuse the hair, it’s been raining on and off and it’s gotten a little frizzy!!

Here’s the back and front of the trousers….

Not a great angle, but you get the idea!
Here’s a close up of the sleeve and bottom edge…..

Think I’ll be making lots of these trousers and Tonic T shirts! Next time I’ll make the trousers a size smaller as they tend to hang more on my hips than waist which make them a little too long.
new patterns arrived in the post today….EXCITED!!
Mums sewing adventure Part II
Previously……
I started and finished my mums dress, it didn’t really get to be a UFO for my mum as she never started it.
Today mum has been shamed into making another ‘1 hour dress’ which she spent 3 hours cutting out a month ago.
I called in at 3pm so see how things were getting on…..
3 broken needles
2 broken needle threaders
& a machine that would play ball.
2 mins later, all ok….! Replaced the bottom spool as the thread hadn’t been wound on with any tension it was loose.
Mum started sewing the first seem, took her foot off the pedal and the machine carried on on its own! So funny! If I hadn’t have been there I wouldn’t have believed her!
The pedal’s sticking, think due to lack of use!
Oh dear, think my mums destined not to sew…not today anyway!
Hi Blogging World!

My new outfit from Thimberlina. Hopefully I’ll be posting things I’ve made soon!

My Mums Sewing Adventure
Back in July my mum & I paid a visit to Minerva Crafts shop in Lancashire. I’d seen some fabric in their online store and wanted to see it in real life. Whilst there my mum got all excited and bought some material & a pattern. She’s not sewn for ages and ages so was going to be dusting off her machine that was neglected in her spare bedroom.
Here’s the pattern (simplicity 1611) & fabric (a woven soft fabric with a lovely drape):
My mum decided to make the dress full length but without the overlay. After seeing the material and pattern for a few weeks in the dining room, neglected, I decided to help her out and cut the pattern out for her. Then ‘we’ (the royal we!) began stitching. Lots accomplished in just an hour – all stitched up – it just needed hemming and the arm hole edges finishing. Then things came to a grinding halt as we were thinking the dress needed sleeves as the arm holes were a little bit low. The dress has been hung on my landing since August until this morning.
Fitting One (well, First one today!)
Not a good look…… my mum’s 5’1″ and although ‘we’ were planning on shortening it, at the minute it made her look like she was sat on a buffet that was hiding under the dress. I suggested ‘we’ cut it in 2 and turn into a top and a skirt which I thought she may get more use out of it. She was up for it, so whilst she made a cuppa I chopped it in 2.
‘We’ added elastic to the waist, hemmed the bottom and had a maxi skirt in no time………
The top was a little more challenging. I’d never made sleeves before for a sleeveless top. I’d recently downloaded FREE the Tonic Tee Shirt from Skinny Bitch Curvy Chick so decided to use the sleeves from that pattern, and added 2 inches to the length of them.
Great Photo (sorry mum xx) – we need to practice our pouting! All the young ones do it on Facebook but it’s harder than it looks! Especially if your lipstick sticks your lips together!
After hemming the bottom and sleeves my mum was really really pleased with the finished outfit.
She was so excited that when I took her home she showed me a dress that she was going to make on Monday…….
It only takes an hour – so far she’s spent 2 hours cutting it out……(5 weeks ago!)
Hope you’ve enjoyed hearing about my lovely mum, and with a bit of luck she’ll read this which might give her some encouragement to make the dress on Monday. I’ll keep you posted!
My latest additions
Say ‘hello’ to my latest stash additions, and my mum!
Top left:
Very soft cotton jersey, I’m thinking maxi dress with sleeves for winter to wear with boots. I bought 1.5m, it’s 150cm wide, only £3.99/m.
Top right:
Silver, textured, feels a bit like upholstery fabric, but I’ve washed it and it still looks ok. This was a remanent for £4. I’ve ordered Vogue 1036 pattern to make a jacket. I won’t have enough in the silver so I’m going to find a really dark blue soft denim to fill in the gaps.
Bottom left:
A semi sheer fabric. Was a remnant (£4) so no idea of composition. Has stripes running horizontally around 5 inches wide in 6 different shades of grey (not 50!! Lol). Think I’m going to make a slouchy hoodie with this.
Finally, bottom right
Another remanent (£3). It’s a semi sheer viscose. No stretch. Oh no! Will have to make sure it fits properly! Think I may make something for my best friend mum. Crossed it out cos I get a bit mixed up as to whether my fab mum’s my best pal or my mum. She’s both!!
Here’s my mum, Sheila! Not the most flattering pic I have of her (think she’ll go bonkers when she sees this on the world wide web!) We were out shopping and was offered a free makeover in Boots when I took this photo.
Here’s the fabric, I think it will really suit her…she’s been trying to pinch the floaty top in the camouflage fabric I made last week, but I really like that!!
All of the above fabric was from http://www.topstitchofbrighouse.co.uk
They have a proper shop in Brighouse (1/2 mile from where I work, whoop whoop!!) as well as an online shop. It’s not the best choice for fabrics, but it’s fantastic for haberdashery and everything else you might need. They also run sewing courses, and offer individual tuition too.
