The Colette Wren at The Yorkshire White Rose Awards

On Monday we attended the White Rose Awards at the Leeds Arena.  It is the largest celebration of tourism excellence in the UK.  The dress code was black tie.  I didn’t need any more encouragement than that to fire up my creative juices and make a new frock!

#colettewren 305

I’ve already written a post about my first and second muslin of the new Wren dress pattern from Colette.  I had 5m of this sparkly silvery ponte knit from Minerva.  I originally bought 2m to make my sister a coco for her birthday but then couldn’t resist and had to buy some more for me.

#tillycoco 282

I intend to write a full post later about the nitty gritty of the other changes I wanted and also needed to make to the pattern so it would be perfect for my chosen fabric and the occasion!

#colettewren wrap dress

This post is all about the finished dress and the awards ceremony.

#colettewren 301

All dressed up and somewhere to go!!  Hubby scrubs up well too, don’t you think?!

#colettewren 294

Wahay! Look at that thigh high spit!  Best be careful how I sit, don’t want to be doing a Sharon Stone!

#colettewren 297

I felt amazing in my new dress and it was reassuring to know that no one else there would have a dress like mine!  With one thousand guests attending i bet there weren’t many others who could say that!

#colettewren 298

Check out those sheer sleeves!  Think they’re my favourite part.

#colettewren 299

The extra length and the sway back adjustment ensured a perfect fit on the back bodice.

#colettewren 295

Got a bit carried away with the photo shoot!

#colettewren 296

For the eagle eyed amongst you, have you noticed my hair’s different that the photo with the hubby?  I did my hair and makeup and took some more pix today with the help of the tripod and the zapper.

So now a few pics from the night…….

#colettewren 313

I had a selfie with Alex Lees – one of the young and handsome cricketers.

#colettewren 310

And some bloke from Emmerdale.  No idea who he is but the table next to us were all from Emmerdale and he was the best looking!

#colettewren 314

The food was amazing, especially the pudding. I can’t believe they dished up a thousand of these!!

#colettewren 315

After the awards and dinner we danced and drunk wine until the early hours.

#colettewren 293

And boy was I glad to get my shoes off when I got home!

#colettewren 300

With a hubby who is 11 inches taller than me I need some help in the height stakes!

#SundaySevens Week 61 (me 36)

It’s that time again – here’s my weeks in 7 ish photos.  Head over to Natalie’s blog at Threads and Bobbins to read more.

Before I start on my week I’ll mention the photo above.  As those in the UK will know it’s Remembrance Sunday.  We had a good turn out in our parade today and as usual accompanied by the pipers.  I might be wrong but I think they’re the West Yorkshire Fire Service Pipers (The WYFS HQ is in our village).

1  Chilli from the freezer – defrosted leftovers for tea. I got engrossed in my sewing (the Wren and it’s nearly finished!!)  and didn’t leave enough time to cook anything.  Thank goodness for microwaves!

#sundaysevens 286

2  Had a bit of a revelation.  I usually use scissors or my dads guillotine to trim 2 sides of my PDF patterns.  The rotary cutter is much quicker!

#sundaysevens 287

3  Whilst working this week I was sent to a call at Bradford Interchange (buses and trains).  In the main foyer was a Boar made from sand. (I took the pic after I dealt with the patient and the crew had taken him to hospital!).

#sundaysevens 290

4  A little about the boar.  I’d never heard of it before!  (haha that rhymes!)

#sundaysevens 289

5  Me and Mags – one of my golfing buddies (she’s 71, and still a fab player, winning the golfer of the year for 2015!). Anyway, she’s been having a sort out and came across this pic and texted it to me.  Gosh!! No need for a FBA there!  It was only about 7 or 8 years ago.  Maybe the running will get me back to my fighting weight!

#sundaysevens 291

6  Zac…. He lives opposite.  I see him out on walks all the time but here he is wearing his new jumper!  He wasn’t a very willing model and I think his owner must have thought I was a bit daft when I asked if I could take his photo!  If you’re local and would like a doggy jumper they’re £8 on Dewsbury market (from the wool shop on the corner) and can be made to order in any colour and size!

#sundaysevens 288

7  This popped up to say ……

#sundaysevens 285

Couldn’t quite believe it.  That’s a lot of hours blogging when I could’ve been sewing!  But then I wouldn’t have met all you lovely people! xxx

When One Thing Leads To Another – The Colette Wren Part 1

My big sister (older by 10 days short of a year) celebrated her birthday at the end of October.  Two years ago I made her a leather bag and last year I made her a Coco.  This year she said she would like another Coco and chose this sparkly ponte knit from Minerva:

#tillycoco 282It does change colour a little bit depending on the light but this gives a fair idea of the fabric.  It took a bit of tweaking before I was happy with this photo.

So onwards and upwards.  I completed her Coco in about 1 1/2 hours (I’ve made a few so can almost do them with my eyes shut, they seem to be our family uniform!).

#sewingcoco

It was just as well that I got a photo of her new Coco on Gertrude as these were the best of the photo shoot in the pub:

#tillycoco 281

#tillycoco 279

#tillycoco 278

Anyway, she loved it! I loved it! I wanted to keep it!  But instead I ordered another 5 metres of this gorgeous fabric just for me!  I was thinking another Morris Blazer, Christmas Coco, Sallie Jumpsuit…. would 5m be enough with all what I had in mind!!??

And then it happened.  Colette released their new dress pattern – The Wren and I bought a dress from a fancy charity shop that happened to be a wrap dress, and also happened to make me look like I’d lost 2 stones in weight!

So that was it!! New Wren pattern bought and plans formed to use shiny silver ponte knit for said wrap dress!

I’ve a posh black tie do to go to in a couple of weeks so I’m hoping this will be just the ticket!  Oops!!! Just checked the website so I can show you where we’re off and it’s next Monday, not the Monday after, best get mi skates on!!  — It’s the Yorkshire White Rose Awards which is going to be held at the new Leeds Arena and I’m really excited!

So you’re here really to read about the Wren aren’t you!  Click on the photo below for the link to the Colette website.

Here’s muslin number 1 (apologies for flesh that hasn’t seen daylight since last december but if I didn’t show these then the post would be a bit pointless wouldn’t it?)

Front view – really really short!  Do I really have such a long body!!??  Or maybe it’s the boobs? But I’m only a B cup!

#colettewren 277

Back view – length ok, could really do with a slight sway back adjustment.  And very tight!

#colettewren 276

Slight gapeage.
#colettewren 275

Another back view, showing the need for a sway back adjustment a bit better:

#colettewren 272

I made a few notes after the first fitting.  I’m so glad I used the proper fabric.

I measure 41/34.5/40 .  I initally traced off a size large which is for a 40-42/32-34/42-44 with finished measurements of 38 1/4  – 33 3/4 – 39 3/4

Fabric suggestions are;  Light to medium weight knit fabrics with at least 25% stretch, baby rib knit, French terry, double knit, ITY.

Although mine isn’t as stretchy I’m sure I read somewhere that version 1 with the narrow skirt would work better with a more stable knit.

Anyway, I sized up to an XL.  The finished garment measurements on this size are just over my own measurement so a little bit of ease.

ALTERATIONS I MADE TO MY PATTERN:

Lengthened all  bodice pieces by 4cm.

Moved the armscye curve inwards to allow room to make a dart to eliminate the gapeage.  Only changed the armscye on the front and not the back piece.

#colettewren 267

I added 2 cm to the bottom width of the neckband to increase coverage at the front. I didn’t increase it at all at the top – you can see the new edge which would no longer be parallel with the grainline so I drew in a new grainline which is now parallel. (hope that makes sense!)

#colettewren 266

Now here comes the tricky bit.

I added 4 cm to the back piece but them did a 5cm sway back adjustment.  I had to look this up and found THIS tutorial on Kitchycoo’s blog to be most useful.  I needed SBAs before but never bothered.  Was quite easy, don’t really know what I was scared of!

#colettewren 271

I wasn’t really sure where to cut the hinge so I did it just below the shorten/lengthen lines.

#colettewren 269

I ended up with an odd shaped back piece.  Let’s see what happened after I sewed it up.

Yay! It reaches my navel!  Result!

#colettewren 263

Frontal gapeage acceptable, after all I’m sure there will be plenty of low cut frocks at the do!

#colettewren 265

Side seam looks vertical. Slight gapeage on the back armscye but only when arms are up!

#colettewren 262

Back looks so much better.  The 5cm sway back seemed a bit drastic after adding 4cm to the length but it worked!

#colettewren 261

Darts pinned, improving the overall fit of the front.
#colettewren 264

And just one last one.  For this photo I pulled the front down. Not loads but enough to give an idea what if would look like with the skirt attached.

#colettewren 260

I’m really happy with how this 2nd muslin fits.  I just wish I’d pre-washed the fabric before I made this up.  I’m a bit scared to use it for the real thing without a prewash.

For the making of the actual dress I’m going to make a few changes:

  • I want to line the bodice so I can have neater finished on the neckline and front bands.  The pattern calls for just turning and stitching with a double needle, but i think I need a neater finish for a posh frock.
  • I’m thinking of adding sheer fitted sleeves – some sort of black nylon type of fabric.  Yet to find and running out of time!
  • Making the skirt maxi length.

I should imagine there’ll be a few more changes before I finish properly. Until then……..Cheerio 😉

PS Sorry for the blog post overload!  I’m just making the most of the beginning of the week when I’ve 3 days off and H is back to school!

The Worldwide WordPress 5k – #wwwp5k

As part of the Worldwide WP 5k 2015 I’m sharing with you what I got up to last week when I did my first ever 5k run.

As some of you already know on the 24th August I decided it was about time I got off my crafty but and did some exercise. I downloaded a couch to 5K running app on my phone and off I jogged.

#sundaysevens 163 (3)

At first I thought my lungs would explode after just a minute running but it got easier, and I even started to enjoy it.  After only 4 weeks I’d clocked up of 40 km!

#sundaysevens 170 (5)

But then disaster struck (only a minor one).  My achilles tendons were giving me some trouble, especially first thing on a morning.  So I rested for 2 weeks and rode my bike to try and keep up my slowly developing fitness level.

#WWWP5K 246

I was soon up for running again, but didn’t feel I could carry on from where I had left off – I’d built up to running for 10 minutes.  So I went back to the beginning and did more intervals of running and walking.

THEN I saw the post last week (link above) and thought “what the heck”!  In for a penny in for a pound, and signed up on the Park Run website.  I’m lucky that our nearest park run is set in Oakwell Hall Country Park.

So with very little running experience under my belt (the longest I’d run in one go was 12 minutes) I turned up with a big smile, lots of enthusiasm and my son!

Everyone was really friendly.  There was a little talk for all the first timers and it was good to see that there were quite a few of us.  There was also some new to this particular park run, one lady was visiting from Devon!

After our little pep talk it was over to the start line.

#WWWP5K 249

I really wish I’d taken more photos before the event, but I was a little over awed.  As it was Halloween lots of the regulars were in fancy dress and all of the marshalls were in fancy dress too.  There was a great atmosphere as were cheered on by ghosts and goolies!

After 34 minutes and 44 seconds I crossed the finish line!  It was hard but I felt great afterwards.  I did walk a couple of times going up one of the hilly sections, so my goal for next time is to slow jog when it gets tough and not to walk.

Here’s me at the finish line with H my 13 year old son.  He did it too and I bet him by 50 seconds!  And I wore my Fehr Trade running top!

#WWWP5K 250

Unfortunately I can’t make the next 2 Saturdays as I’m working but I’m definitely going on the 21st November and I can’t wait for my second park run!!

I’m so glad I read the post about the wwwp5k 2015 as I’d probably not gotten round to it for a few weeks, so Thankyou and well done to all the others who took part!

#SundaySevens Week 60 (me 35)

Hey! Don’t you just love Sundays and catching up what all the other Sunday Seveners have been up to?! It’s not nosy (Teresa!), it’s just good to see what else goes on when we’ve not got a hook or a needle in our hands.

sundaysevens

If you’d like to read more about the Sunday Sevens and fancy joining in head over to Natalie’s blog at Threads and Bobbins and start sharing 7 photos of randomness amongst your fellow bloggers.

1  My new washing machine arrived! It’s been not stop all week trying to catch up!

#sundaysevens 257

2  A very common position that H has been in this week in the school hols – xbox with Rory sat on his knee!

#sundaysevens 258

3  Miserable day but still went out for a short run.  Managed to slip on some leaves and went flying.  A photo of the sheep instead of my gravel rash.

#sundaysevens 256

4  My new (to me)dress .  Felt strange wearing something I’d not made, but now I want more wrap dresses, so I’ve bought the new dress pattern from Colette – the Wren dress.

5   The table settings at the wedding were stunning!

#sundaysevens 253

So that’s my week!  The front photo is the hubby and I in the Morgan that the bride and groom had hired for a few days!  Isn’t she a beauty!

Birthday Cape – Oliver and S Woodland Stroll Cape

I had Birthday Cake – a HUGE one, and now I’ve got a Birthday Cape too.  As those of you who follow my Sunday Sevens will know I received a fabric gift for my recent birthday.  After much head scratching, googling and input from my wonderful imaginary blogging friends I decided to make the Woodland Stroll Cape from Oliver + S.

Suggested fabric include wool coating, wool melton, velveteen, moleskin and corduroy.  Not sure of the exact make up of my fabric but there was definitely some wool content.  I opted not to pre wash.  Unusual for me, but my washing machine broke down a week yesterday so didn’t have much choice!

Here’s my birthday fabric bundle.  Still not sure what the lips are going to be, maybe a pussy bow blouse.  I’ve been wanting one for ages!

IMG_0205

Once I’d set my heart on the cape I soon discovered I’d not got enough fabric – according the the fabric guide.  1 1/2 yards is needed, and I had 1 metre.

Here’s how the 2 pattern  pieces look with the grannie in the right direction:

#oliverands 260

Ooops!  It’s never gonna fit!

Then I thought about cutting the front pieces on the bias – and that fitted, maybe not quite at 45 degrees:

#oliverands 259

And then I had a flash of geniusism!  (is there such a word!!?) How about I cut both pieces on the bias and create a centre back seam:

#oliverands 261

Yay!!  It fit!!  I didn’t worry myself with pattern matching – the vertical splurgy lines were so random that there didn’t appear to be any matching to do!  (the above pieces are pre – tracing.  This shows the biggest size – I cut mine out in a large (12-14) the 2nd to largest size – this might be helpful if you’re thinking of making one and wondering how much fabric you’ll need.

For the lining I manage to fit it on the 1m pieces.

#oliverands 258

The making up was plain sailing.  Except for sewing the curve of the neckline.  I’m not sure why it was so tricky.  I felt like I could manoeuvre the fabric as it sewed – could this be because I was using my walking foot??

Anyway, several stitching lines later………

#oliverands 253

I think really I should have drawn the stitching line directing on to the fabric.  I will next time!!

Stitching the lining to the front was a bit time consuming – be sure to use loads and loads and loads of pins, and unless you have a HUGE table you’ll need to do this on the floor – it takes up quite a bit of space.

I felt like I was making some sort of bat man cape at this point!

#oliverands 256

Pins galoure – thought I was going to have to call out and buy some more!!

#oliverands 255

More pins please!

#oliverands 254

Button holes…… after about 15 practice runs (no I’m not kidding) my machine stitched the real ones beautifully:

#oliverands 251

Once it has made one the machines instructions advises to hit start again and make another directly on top of the first.  It makes a stronger button hole.

#oliverands 250

And the buttons… just love ’em! they about an inch and are shiny silvery metal.  Bit heavy but ok on the wool.

#oliverands 262

And now for the best bit…… for you not me!! Was a nightmare trying to get some pix – workmen in the garden would think I was balmy and H’s mates due to arrive any time = nervous model and nervous photographer!!

Bright sunshine at one side of the garden makes my hair look orange!!

#oliverands 248 #oliverands 247 #oliverands 246

And in the shade at the other side it all looks a bit dull!

#oliverands 245 #oliverands 244 #oliverands 242

Gertrude wears it well though!

#oliverands 241

Overall I’m really pleased.  I’d never have chosen this fabric myself so thankyou Tina for putting my out of my comfort zone!

Has anyone else had successes from fabric bought as a pressie?

PS apologies if there’s any spelling errors – dashing off to work now and not had time to read through it! Cheerio!

#SundaySevens week 59 (me 34)

Hi Lovelies!

How’s your week been? Hope you’re feeling happy in whatever you’ve been up to!  I have, and I’ve actually made 2 garments.  Can’t wait to show you!

In the meantime here’s my Sunday Sevens – my week in sevens photos, thought up by a very talented Yorkshire lass who now resides is America, and blogs over at Threads and Bobbins

1  Remember my birthday fabric from last week?  Thankyou for all the wonderful suggestions.  I finally decided on the Woodland Stroll Cape by Oliver and S.  An especially big thankyou to the Prolific Project Starter for all her links and hints.  You can see the one she made for her daughter HERE. So cute!

I decided to add one of my labels.  I don’t normally bother when I’m making myself something but I thought this was a bit more special and deserved one.

#sundaysevens 248 (1)

2  H’s football team spent Saturday washing cars at our local co-op.  They raised over £400 which is going towards some new kit.

#sundaysevens 241 (1)

3  We went out for lunch and H got a huge cajun chicken burger!  He managed to polish the lot off!

#sundaysevens 247 (1)

4  Whilst in Brighouse I called into a local hospice charity shop. There’s 2 and one just sells all the ‘designer stuff’.

I bought this wrap dress for £15.  Think I might wear it for this Thursdays wedding as I’ve not made anything yet and am cutting it a bit fine.  I think it could look quite good if I loose the jeans and boots and wear some heals!

#sundaysevens 246 (1)

5   Chilli lasagne – a bit of a compromise. I love chilli and the hubby loves lasagne.  The big chunk that’s missing went via meals on wheels down to my parents as my mum had been working.  They help us out loads with H so I like to do my bit when I can.

#sundaysevens 242 (1)

6    New shoes!!  Bought them from the above mentioned charity shop. Lovely leather sling back wedges and never worn!  £12.50!  Bargain!!  And they can dance too.  Well they did last night after a bottle of wine at the cricket club!

#sundaysevens 244 (1)

7    Just to show all my meals aren’t amazingly tempting!  I’d been out for a run and needed some proper food for breakfast.  I’m trying to avoid bread (but  not cake) so had a whole tin of baked beans and a couple of fried eggs.  Tasted much better than they looked!

#sundaysevens 243 (1)

So that’s it!  Oh, and just to mention, the ‘feature’ photo is of a local curtain shop in Cleckheaton called Inches.  I recently called in when we were looking for a blind for our lounge and discovered the most amazing collection of buttons ever!

Remember the ones on my SBCC Cabernet Cardigan? They were from there, and I found some for my new cape.  As soon as I’ve finished here I’m off to sew the button holes and get it finished!

For anyone who’s local it’s definitely worth a visit.  There’s a vast haberdashery as well as gifts.  There’s even remnants for a pound each which are the little mini curtains that are used in displays – they’d be perfect for anyone making bags.

Hope you have a smashing week! Look forward to seeing what you’ve been up to in your Sunday Sevens.  If you’ve not decided to join us, why not!?  It’s great fun and lets others know a bit more about your goings on away from your crafty corner.

#SundaySevens week 58 (me 33)

Hello everyone! Just a word of warning – don’t read on if you’re peckish!

Sorry no links to the wonderful Natalie who thought up the Sunday Sevens – I’m posting on a mobile device and it’s a bit tricky (well it is for me anyway!). Previous SS posts have links so take a peak if you’d like to find out more.

Thanks for all the happy birthday wishes!  I’ve had a lovely week and most of my pics centre around my birthday. I’ve only worked one shift this week, hence the abundance of posts, hope I’ve not clogged up your reader or mail box too much!

1. We took a lady in labour onto the delivery suit.  Some of the staff when on their break were busy knitting little hats for the newborns who would be delivered over Christmas. Here’s one nearly finished.

2.  There’s some stunning photos about of the Autumn leaves changing colour. I took quite a few whilst playing golf but unfortunately I couldn’t quite catch how colourful they actually were.  Such a shame the sun wasn’t shining.

3. Birthday lunch at the golf club! My favourite. The thought of double egg n chips is what keeps me going on the last few holes. And the staff sang happy birthday as I ate my lunch!

4. Birthday tea!  After Much rummaging (and laughter) in the candle box H & Charlie came up with a 6 and a 0 and some single candles.

5.  My mums speciality! Though most of us didn’t have much room after we’d eaten a big slice of cake. I’ve nibble on this all week and ate the last bit this morning.

6.  Tina (a very non-sewing friend) went to Fabworks to buy me some fabric for my birthday. Apparently it took some choosing and the staff helped. The grey is wool (oh no, maybe dry clean only, but will try on a cold wash), and there’s a metre plus a metre of red lining. The lips fabric is a crepe with slight give, not actual stretch and there’s 2 metre.  Suggestions welcome.

7.  A book from my sister.  I emailed her the Amazon link after seeing something made from it – I think on IG.

Oh and the feature photo!!!  Hubby’s been away on a stag do tha weekend and was surprisingly alert on his return home so we went out for tea to our local.  This wasn’t my dessert hubby and H went halves on theirs. How gorgeous does this banana and toffee cheesecake look!!

Until next time! Back to working 3 shifts this week.  I just ordered some fabric online for my sisters birthday Coco. I mDe her one last year, and I think it’s going to become a tradition.

Have a great week  😀

Lekala 8000 – A Tale Of Two Frocks

Well it’s one frock really, but due to it being far too tight and having giant ric-rac on the hem it was in need of attention before I could wear it publicly.

Remember the Mexican party we went to? It was over the back holiday weekend in August which now seems ages ago.  I needed a Mexican outfit.  After much deliberation and with a hangover I began cutting out the Lekala #8000 – a free pattern that is made to measure my size (or yours)!  It was 4pm and we were going out at 7:30pm so I didn’t have time for fitting issues!

I decided to use the raspberry stretch denim in my stash.  As you can see from the photo below it came very close to being another pair of culottes!  And it’s also what I used in my last post to make the personalised peg bag.

#lekala8000 241

The dress went together really easily.  I had it finished before 7pm but I did cut a few corners.

I added a big red flower from my trip to Bombay Stores the previous day with Amanda & Neela:

#sundaysevens 167 (2)

The neck and arm edges were left unfinished.  I just used a fancy stitch so it didn’t look too untidy.  Think it was about £2.

#lekala8000 246

After I hemmed it I added a length of chucky ric-rac:

#lekala8000 247

A red and green scarf (also from Bombay Stores) was fastened around my waist and together with a borrowed sombrero I was ready to go!

#lekala8000 244

It wasn’t the best fitting garment I’ve ever made and I was surprised it was so tight.  The pattern calls for a woven and this was a stretch denim so I thought it would have plenty of ease, but alas no.   I did feel a bit self conscious as first, but once the margaritas began to flow everyone had their beer goggles on it didn’t matter.  (I was driving by the way and could really not face any alcohol due to excess consumption the previous evening).

lekala8000

For Hubby’s outfit I cut a hole in a big scarf I bought from, yes you guessed, Bombay Stores, and added some tri-coloured ric-rac to the edges.

The night was brilliant. There was even a trio of Mexican singers who kept us entertained all evening.  Though they did surprise us at the end of the night when we heard their Cockney accents!

mexicans

A few days later I was going out and needed a new frock.  I dug out the mexican and made a few alterations.  The dress that is, not the singer!

First up I let out the side seams as much as possible.  This gave me almost an extra inch of breathing space.

#lekala8000 250

I did nothing to the zip but have to show you as it went in beautifully first time (when I made the dress originally).

#lekala8000 248

Instead of unpicking the fancy stitching I just trimmed the edges enough to make them disappear.

#lekala8000 253

reshaped the neckline.  Sorry for the miserable face.  Maybe I should’ve cropped this out!

#lekala8000 255

Once happy with the shape I stay stitched the neckline.

#lekala8000 252

#lekala8000 254

And added bias tape to finish off the neck and arm holes.

#lekala8000 258

Very pretty!  I almost want to wear it inside out!

#lekala8000 259

I unpicked the hem and lengthened it as much as I could.

#lekala8000 260

And here we are – a lightly better fitting frock!

#lekala8000 262

And the back – a sway back adjustment is a necessity if and when I make this again.

I’ve not had chance to wear this again, but really must try it on and see how it fits now I’ve lost a few pounds!  I think it’s a definite improvement without the ric-rac and with the new neckline, don’t you!

If you’re not tempted to have a go with Lekala custom fit patterns, and I’d be surprised if this attempt would entice you, head over to Nee’s blog – Sew Fusion.  This is one of her go to patterns and she’s made some stunning versions, all with just 1 metre of fabric!  She even called her latest one after me – The Autumn Ali!!  For this one she’s using the body of Lekala 8000 and the petal skirt (another free pattern) from Itch to Stitch.  It really is stunning!

I don’t think I’ll be wearing it in the near future with bare legs, but with tights, long black boots and my black Julia cardigan I think it will come in useful!

Hand Made Photo Gifts 2

You might be thinking I’ve a strange fettish for making peg bags.  You might be right!  As you know nearly everyone I know has a one of Thimbers Special peg bags hanging somewhere.  Not usually on their washing line – no one wants to use them as they’re “just for fancy!”

This next one is for a lovely friends 50th birthday pressie.  I met her through cricket – her son played with H in 2013 + 2014 in the Yorkshire B team.  This year her son has moved up into the A team.  We’ve missed her and she’s missed being with us so I thought I’d make her a gift that she’d see every day and wouldn’t forget us.

I’ll include a few pictures of the construction in case you’re thinking of making one.

Select a smallish coat hanger and draw round it to determine the shape of the top of the peg bag. You need 4 pieces – 2 outer fabric and 2 for the lining.

There’s no rule how big it has to be length wise – it’ll depend on how big your washing line is and how many pegs you’ve got!

Decide on a shape for the hole – I chose an oval this time.  My first attempt looked a bit small so I redrew it.

#photogifts 215

Pin a lining piece to the front piece – right sides together – and stitch together following the shape you’ve drawn.  It will be easier to stitch the curves if you use a small stitch.

#photogifts 214

Trim close to the stitching.

#photogifts 213

Before you turn the lining through the oval hole press the seams open – this will make it neater.  Just mind your fingers!

#photogifts 212

Turn through.  Give it a good press.  Edge stitch around the oval opening.  (This picture shows the front and the lining basted together.  Don’t do this yet – you need to add the photos!!)

I added the photos a bit different to how I did it on the toiletries bag in my last post.

This time I transferred the photos to the sandy coloured denim fabric, then appliquéd them onto the peg bag.  I think this looks better and wish I’d have done this on the toiletries bag.

I shuffled the photos around until I was happy with their positions.

#photogifts 211

I just used one pin to hold them in place and pinned just outside from the photo transfer.

#photogifts 210Pull the lining away and stitch using a small zig zag.
#photogifts 209Baste the front and it’s lining together close to the edge.  Stitch the photos on to the outer back piece of the peg bag and then baste the lining – wrong sides together.  This is the lining which will be visible through the oval opening once finished.
#photogifts 208Neaten the raw edge – I just used a zig zag.
#photogifts 206

Turn over the pointy bit at the top of the peg back and stitch down.

#photogifts 205

Stitch the front and back together.

#photogifts 204

Turn the right way round and insert your coat hanger.

#photogifts 203

Ta – dah!!!

#photogifts 202

She won’t forget us now will she!!??

#photogifts 201

Thought I’d hang it on my washing line and make sure it works!

#photogifts 197

Aw…. doesn’t it look lovely blowing in the wind?!

#photogifts 199

Shame it says “Happy Birthday Ann” on it.  It’s another I’d have loved to have kept!

#photogifts 198

Ann loved her pressie!  I’ve showed you this pic already on my Sunday Sevens but here she is again opening up her gift.  She’s not going to use it as a beg bag, it’s far too nice she said.  She’s going to hang it in her kitchen and find some thing else to keep in it instead!

The fabric I used is the same one I used for the toiletries bag, but this colour is called raspberry.  It was going to be used to make another pair of culottes, but i made a Lekala dress instead (to be blogged soon), and I had some left.  It’s still in stock at Minerva and is only £5.99 a metre.  I’ve seen it made up into jeans on someones blog and I can’t for the life of me remember who’s it was.  If it’s you and you’re reading it add a link in the comments to show them off – they’re fab, and I’d like another look!
