Birthday Cake Singer Sewing Machine!

Happy Birthday to a very talented fellow Yorkshire Spoolette who has made herself the most amazing cake ever!! 😀

Vintage Sewing Machine CakeI’ve got a big birthday this weekend so I’ve got 12 friends for dinner tomorrow night and I’ve just made myself a birthday cake, a few people have said ‘but that’s all work for you’ but that’s what I enjoy, I like it!

A few years ago I was given a cake decorating book for my birthday. It’s by Zoe Clark and it’s called Vintage Cakes, there are some stunning cakes in there. As soon as I saw the sewing machine cake I decided I would make it for my 50th birthday…and here we are!!

Vintage Sewing Machine CakeIt takes an awful lot of cake, though due to a printing error, not as much as the instructions say! The base called for an 18″ x 16″ cake, it took several days to realise it probably should read 8″ X 16″, I had already decided I was just going to use two 8″ cakes…

Peg Bag Envy And Upcycling a Sports Shirt

It’s almost 2 years since I made my first peg bag, and since then I’ve made quite a few.  Each one I’ve wanted to keep, but instead each was lovingly wrapped and gifted to some lucky friend or family member.

For this next one I wanted to use one of H’s Yorkshire cricket shirts as it was for the husband and wife team who’ve looked after the under 13Bs this season.

Here’s how you can upcycle a favourite sports or polo shirt that is no longer worn, but has too much sentimental value to give to the charity shops.

#pegbag 177

Firstly you need to find some suitable hangers.  The ones I used are from Wilkinsons and come in a pack of 6 I think (it’s been a whilst since I bought them).

The angle of the hanger won’t be the same angle as the shoulders of the top you’ll be using, so you need to do a C.H.A.   Bet you’ve not come across that one before!!??  It’s a coat hanger adjustment, lol!  Tickled me anyway!

Turn the T shirt inside out, place the hanger centrally at the top and mark the new shoulder seam – I used a biro.  Continue drawing the shape of the sides and bottom of the peg bag.  I just eyeballed it – no special formula.

Pin the fronts and backs together to keep them aligned.

#pegbag 176

Sitich all the way round using a long basting stitch.

#pegbag 174

Turn it the right way round, insert hanger.

#pegbag 173

Everything looks ok, and I could reach in easily for the pretend pegs that weren’t in yet.  Turn it back inside out and trim off the excess fabric:

#pegbag 172

I then reinforced all the seams with a lightening stitch, and stitched 4 rows at the bottom to make sure it was going to be super strong!

#pegbag 171

Et Voila!

#pegbag 168 #pegbag 169

I gave it to Mrs Team Manager at the last match of the season and she loved it!  So did the other mums and nans!  I think I’ll be making a few more of these as the lads grow out of their shirts!

Here’s a quick look at the others I’ve made.  I’d previously trawled the internet for ideas and stumbled across Carla’s blog –  Granny Mauds Girls  who has a fab tutorial.  I used her pattern and lettering on a few on them.

#pegbag 165On others I used my own style but her lettering:

This one was for Bertha – my parents Caravan so needed a zip so the pegs didn’t fall out.

#pegbag 166

The was for my brother!  An up cycled denim shirt complete with pearl snappers!

#pegbag 167

And this one was for my Auntie Kath who I made an apron too to match!

#pegbag 163

Now all I have to do is make one just for me as my pegs are just left on the washing line (shock horror I know!).  Think I might dabble with a bit of lace on mine and test out the new technique I’ve learnt!

Sunday Sevens Week 50 (me 25)

Hi Everyone!

Here’s my week in seven photos as thought up by Natalie over at Threads and Bobbins.  I was a late starter and have now been at it for 25 weeks! (pat on the back!) It’s great for me to keep a track of what I get up to, a bit like a mini diary I suppose, and it also shows you another side to Thimbers.

1   An unexpected surprise as we left Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.  I wasn’t driving! I’ve worked a couple of nights on the ambulance this week instead of the response car.

#sundaysevens 169 (2)

2   Played golf and won a £35 Marks and Spencer gift voucher!  It was so wet, we got drenched on the back 9.  And then afterwards we finalised and booked our ladies trip to Portugal next April!  There’s 8 of us going and it could get messy!

#sundaysevens 170 (2)

3    We’ve celebrated our 15th Wedding Anniversary this week and I must be a very good wife as Mr Thimbers bought me an Apple Watch!  I have been dropping HUGE hints since they came out!  I also got a bunch of flowers too off H (see feature image above).

#sundaysevens 168 (2)

4  I’d everything ready to cut out my next pair of Emily Culottes but then my plans changed when I needed the raspberry denim to make a dress for a Mexican Themed party.

#sundaysevens 165 (2)

5  I met up with Amanda from Sew Deputy and Nee from Sewfusion for lunch and a trip to Bombay Stores in Bradford. Lovely ladies!!  I feel like I’ve known them for ever!

#sundaysevens 167 (2)

6  We went to a Mexican themed 50th birthday on Saturday night.  I intended to make Lekala 8000 in the morning then go watch cricket in the afternoon.  I ended up not surfacing from my bed until 3pm due drinking excessive amounts of pink wine the evening before (at a different 50th). It was a rush but I got it finished! Here’s me with one of hubby’s work buddies:

#sundaysevens 163 (2)

7  A rare treat – hubby cooked breakfast, at his mum’s, but it was still nice to sit back and do nothing!

#sundaysevens 164 (2)

I’m looking forward to the week ahead as me and hubby have both booked the week off work, and there’s no cricket until next Saturday!   I wonder what we’ll do with ourselves!?  All will be revealed in next week’s Sunday Sevens.  Until then…. Cheerio x

Sunday Sevens Week 49 (me 24!)

These weeks are flying by, and those of you who joined Natalie right at the beginning of #Sunday Sevens I bet you can’t believe it’s nearly a year since it all started!

I wonder if Natalie is going to organise a party for us over at Threads & Bobbins?!

Here’s my week in sevenish photos:

1. Hubby’s work entered 4 teams in a golf day at Woodsome Hall Golf Club in Huddersfield.  His games not up to scratch so I stepped in and took his place! Woodsome Hall is steeped in history, it’s a 16th Century listed building set in the middle of stunning grounds which is now a golf course (and has been for over 100 years). The top photo shows the front of the building, and the one below show the 1st tee and putting green which would once have been the front lawn. It can be quite intimidating teeing off when there’s other golfers gathered round watching!

2. H’s last Yorkshire match of the season. Usually I take hundreds of photos at the matches, narrow it down to about 80 and upload them to the cricket Facebook page. Because of this there’s never any photos of me.  I soon changed that and took pictures of me with everyone there was 40 altogether, here’s just a small selection!

3. Posted off 6 small parcels for my recent giveaway

4. A Swede cooked whole in the microwave! Not done it before but turned out ok – Quite moist and juicy! Chop the top off and cook for 20 minutes on full power if you fancy having a go!

5.  Watching cricket at Melthem one evening when we saw a helicopter with something hanging below but not sure what it was. You may have to zoom in.

6.  Stood by catching up watching the Bake Off:

7. Practicing lace insertion! It’s from the latest craftsy class which I’ve bought – Katrina Walker’s decorative seams. The class included a copy of Vogue 1329 which has lots of scope for fancy seam and piece work.

Before I go, in case you’re wondering, yes it’s Sunday today! The last 2 weeks I’ve been late with my Sunday Sevens but today I’m working and managed to do it in my lunch break – lunch at 10:30am, great time for spag’ bol’!

Cheerio x

Oops! Forgot to mention my feature photo.  Usually I’ve been updating you on my mum’s new kitchen but as there’s no change this week, i thought I’d add a selfie of me and my sewing machine. Random I know, but what the heck!

Emily Culottes – The Jury’s Still Out

I wore culottes in the 80’s.  I also wore bright yellow full length pencil skirts and goth make up for a short time (not together, I hasten to add), but it doesn’t mean I’m going to do it all again now I’m approaching my mid 40’s.

Or does it!?

Whilst browsing the blogasphere, which I’m currently spending more time doing than actually sewing, I stumbled across Maris’s post (over at Sew Maris) declaring she was going to host a sewalong to make Itch to Stitch’s Emily Culottes.

Click on the image to be taken to Itch to Stitch!

I can’t recall at what point I decided to join in, but that’s not important.  What is important is that I did and I made them and now I’m wearing them!! TWO days in a row!  But I’m still not sure.

A few of you might have heard of Itch To Stitch Patterns.   There’s quite a few Lindy Petal Skirts floating about on the net – it’s their free pattern and is really lovely and easy and on my to-do list.

I’m not getting commission for pushing this pattern – just like to share the love of free patterns to you guys!

The Culottes.  That’s why your here isn’t it? The instructions are very thorough, great diagrams and lots of support from Kennis.  I was surprised a sewalong was needed.  But then Maris comes along and breaks it down into bit size chunks and adds her own twist on the instructions.

I was late starting so read all Maris’s posts and all Kennis’s instructions and used a bit of both.

I used a cheap stretch denim from Fabworks in Dewsbury.  It bled like made and had faded lines on it when i pre washed it. I thought it would be ok for a muslin. I had some raspberry red stretch denim from Minerva which I was saving for the real thing!

I didn’t have enough denim so used so scraps of liberty for the yoke.  I added interfacing to both inside and outside yoke pieces to make it more substantial so used Maris instructions for the outer and Kennis for the inner!

When I came round to trying them on I was pleasantly surprised with the fit and also that the marks on the denim weren’t that noticeable.

Once I realised it fit and looked okay-ish I rummaged for a suitable zip and found this beauty, but then had to search for a tutorial on how to insert an exposed zipper/zip!

#emilyculottes 163

I found this amazing tutorial on Pattern Runway – click HERE!

I struggled a bit with the last bit – it was pinning and sewing the left side above.  So I pinned the outside, then pinned the inside, then removed the outside pins and sewed!!

#emilyculottes 164

The last bit of text above is for my future benefit really and probably won’t mean anything to you even if you do one yourself!  You might not struggle like I did!

#emilyculottes 165

Voila!!  Hopefully you’ll be so dazzled by the shiny brass teeth you won’t notice the seam line not matching up!

To hem the bottom – which are huge and now I know what it must have felt like to hem bell bottomed trousers in the 70’s!

There is a 2cm seam allowance. I stitched a row of stitches in matching thread 2 cm from the bottom edge.

#emilyculottes 166

I then used this as a guide and pressed to the stitching line was just on the inside, then stitched in place from the right side – you don’t get them awkward bits of excess fabric if you do it that way – don’t use a walking foot for this!  (I’d already finished all my raw edges with the overlocker before I sewed them up).

#emilyculottes 167

I bet you’re wondering when you’re going to see the finished article!? Or have you already scrolled down for a peak before reading this.  Or maybe you’re not reading this (so won’t see this) and are just looking at the pictures!

Without further ado, me in culottes – now!  Not in the 1980s!

#emilyculottes 173

#emilyculottes 174

#emilyculottes 175

Not the best pics I’m sure, but this show the Liberty Yoke. You can see the lines too where the denim bled and went funny in the wash. Maybe I should have done a slower spin and taken it out of the washing machine sooner (only left it 5  minutes), any suggestions for this not happening again would be welcome.

#emilyculottes 168

And here’s what you can do in culottes that you can’t do in a short skirt:

Cross your legs – unless you’re called Sharon Stone.

#emilyculottes 170

Sit with you legs open – not very lady like, but often we might want to if we are sat on the floor at a picnic ) imagine I’m at a picnic and not sat in my conservatory!

#emilyculottes 171And lastly you can just sit normal and know that you’ll not be giving anyone an unexpected eyeful!

#emilyculottes 169

So what do you think? I’ve only really shown you the more flattering photos.  From the side they make my look huge, or at least to me they do.  But I suppose one day I’ll loose my baby weight and I won’t have to worry about it (should it have gone by now? H is 13?).

Have I tempted you!?

Or I have put you off culottes forever!?

Should I continue to wear them in public.

Should I make a raspberry denim pair!?

A lot of questions!

Don’t feel obliged to answer them all, one will do!

The Denim and Jersey Aurora Tank By Seamwork

Back in June I printed off one of the latest patterns (then it was!) by Seamwork – The Aurora Tank.

I was inspired by Helena from GrayAllDay patterns to make one.  She made one every day for a week and came up with some fab colour combos, and she also discovered that the yoke could be make in a woven as well as a jersey.

Photo from Seamwork

Photo from Seamwork

I traced the pattern off back then, but it wasn’t until a couple of days before our trip to Taunton in July that I got round to whipping one up.  Not sure if it took me 2 hours – I did cut some corners.

I used a remnant of a jersey from my stash, and for the yoke I had some of the stretch denim from my recently made capri pants.

#aurora 163

I thought the denim would be too thick for the inside of the yoke so i was going to use an old black viscose top.

#aurora 164

After I’d cut it out I got lazy and decided the yoke didn’t need an inside as I was going to finish the seams different to the instructions.

After sewing it all together I decided I like the contrasting stay stitching on the denim:

#aurora 165

So I had a play around with fancy stitches on some scrap fabric, unpicked the stay stitching and did this:

#aurora 166

Cool don’t ya think!  A few of my buddies thought I’d hand stitched it! For the jersey part I just left the stay stitching in place to stop it stretching out, and left the bottom unhemmed.  How lazy am I!!

I found the armscye a touch high, even if they had a proper hem I still think they’d be too high:

#aurora 173

I just chopped some fabric away and redid the stay stitching. I did smooth out the cutting!

#aurora 167

I’m not loosing sleep over the unfinishedness of this make – I think it makes it more like a lot of the RTW stuff out there that I want to finish off!

It matches my capris and I’ve worn it quite a few times already.

H took some shots for me, he’s becoming more willing:

#aurora 168

And the back:

#aurora 169

Then when we were in Taunton one evening we walked along the canal into town and had the perfect photo shoot opportunity:

#aurora 170

Could have done with my shades on!

#aurora 171

And no I wasn’t about to jump in!

#aurora 172

There goes another quick little number!

My next make dragged on a while – it’s taken me about 3 weeks on and off to make my Emily Culottes. Yes! You heard right! I’ve made culottes!  Just need some pix and they’ll be with you shortly!

I finished them today and the jury’s still out on them – hubby and mum like then but I’m still not sure. Can’t wait to show you and find out what your verdict is!

Sunday Sevens Weeks 48 (me 23)

Last week Monday was the new Sunday as there were a few of us who were late with their Sunday Sevens.  Yesterday I was too busy having fun at the seaside and was late back so here we are again, but as the old saying goes, better late than never!  I’ve not had chance to catch up on my reader from over the weekend yet.

sundaysevens

Here we go, my round up in seven-ish photos (I’ve had to fasten 3 together to count as one!) of my week, as invented by Natalie over at Threads and Bobbins:

1.   Our hebe bush in the garden is a mass of flowers at the minute, and bees!

#sundaysevens 163 (1)

2.   H Facetimed me whilst I was at work – I took a photo of the iPad screen.  Crazy boy!  Don’t know where he gets it from!

#sundaysevens 164 (1)

3.  Yorkshire v Lancashire away at Northern Cricket Club near Liverpool.  A long trek but we won so all smiles.  The little boy’s brother plays with H and he is only 6, and he loves it when the older boys play with him

#sundaysevens 165 (1)

4.   Nipped into Leeds and saw this skirt in Cath Kidson shop half price in the sale at £44!! How fab is it – very inspirational!

#sundaysevens 166 (1)

5.  Here’s inside our newest shopping centre in Leeds.  It’s THE place to be!! Not for me though as there’s no fabric shops!!  I only call in to use the loos!

#sundaysevens 167 (1)

6.  Played in a team event at Bradford Golf Club and whipped this skirt up in an hour before I played.  You might remember the trousers I made to match this top?  It was a bit warm for them so I needed a skirt to match V1429!

#sundaysevens 168 (1)

7.  Mr Thimbers jet ski came out of hibernation and we went to Whitby for the day with our old jet ski buddies (pre-children 3 other couples had skis and it was a year round hobby).  Our ski is about 20 years old and is the only one still running.  Craig had loads of fun taking all the kids out on the ski.  The skis not been used for 6 years so was a fab day.  H wore my wetsuit so I couldn’t go 😦 and I think I need to invest in a bigger one before we go again!

#sundaysevens 169 (1)

Hope you’ve all had a lovely week and the suns been shining.  Unfortunately there’s no update on the kitchen at my parents – it’s waiting for a lick of pain (bought today) and new flooring to be put down.  The feature photo is Darren (one of the big kids), isn’t the beach gorgeous – if only we had great weather in England a bit more often we’d never want to go abroad!

Yarn Bombing in Taunton

Yarn bombing, yarnbombing, yarn storming, guerrilla knitting, kniffiti, urban knitting or graffiti knitting is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk.

I think I need to get out more as of up until last Saturday I’d never even heard of it!

We were having a stroll around town before heading off home when we turned a corner and entered a small alley way. I was so excited! Everyehere i turned there was gob smacking creations!

I wish I could take you there, but I’m afraid you’ll have to make do with photos, sorry!

It really was amazing!

Stumbling across this alley gave a holiday our lovely happy ending.

Have you heard of yarn bombing? Can you share any links to any other places that have been yarn bombed?!

#GBSB goodie bag 4

Remember a couple of weeks ago I announced a giveaway for the Reusable Swatch Kit from Janome?  Well they only went and sent the Swatch Buddy Expansion Kit too.

So tonight I’ve been busy copy and pasting 38 names onto my iNotes then converting to PDF, printing, then passing on to the department downstairs (i’m upstairs in H’s bedroom on the iMac) to do cutting out, placing in a plastic bag and been drawn out of a hat!  It’s all been a bit crazy, especially as cricket is on TV and it’s hard for them 2 downstairs to concentrate when the TV’s on.

So here we are, in no particular order:

Trisha

Corrineappleby

Terzi Begum

Little Miss Bunting

Jendavismiller

Curlsandskirls

If you could drop me an email with your address I’ll pop them in the post!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment and enter the giveaway.  I’m planning a follow up post with all your brilliant gadget ideas!

Sunday Sevens week 47 (me 22)

Sunday Sevens – invented by Natalie over at Threads & Bobbins.  Letting you know what else we get up to outside our usual blog life!

sundaysevens

After a hectic week in Taunton in Somerset I’m now back to share my week in seven photos with you.  I’ve taken about 1,500 photos this week, so it’s been a bit tough to narrow in down!  H plays cricket for Yorkshire and they were taking part in a cricket festival, playing teams from Ireland, Cheshire, Kent, Cornwall and Dubai!  We came a respectable 2nd, which was fantastic considering we’re Yorkshire B team and we were playing all other A teams.

Chief photographer….. not entirely sure how this started but I tend to take all the photos, and upload them onto a Facebook Group I’ve created. (like I don’t have enough to do, lol!)  Think I need to work on my posture!

#sundaysevens 169

At the entrance to our caravan site there’s these gorgeous sweet peas….

#sundaysevens 163

Went out for a curry to an Authentic Indian Restaurant. I had a seafood platter as a starter.  I took this photo especially for my Sunday Sevens and didn’t notice until afterwards the shape of the prawns!! (bottom left)

#sundaysevens 164

Bought this amazing jacket – not sure what I’m going to do with it!  It’s a big deal me buying clothes and I don’t do it lightly – last years RTW fast completely changed my outlook on shopping.  This was in the sale at £50, should have been over £400!! I think the cuffs and the belt need to go – it looks like a smoking jacket!!…..watch this space!

#sundaysevens 167

We don’t often get a photo of the 3 of us, and when we do I’m always amazing by how much H has grown! Think he’ll need a new Yorkshire blazer for next year!

#sundaysevens 166

Some of the lads……. (H in the middle at the back – can just make him out).

#sundaysevens 165

On our way home on Saturday the M5 was crazy busy as usual so we decided to go to Brean Sands.  We used to take H there camping when he was a lot younger, and we’d take his 4 cousins too.  He went on all the rides at the fair and loved it, though he remembered it being a lot bigger! Here’s a then and now picture….

#sundaysevens 170

I’m hoping normal service will resume in my cyber/sewing life now I’m home and H has only 2 Yorkshire matches left.   After being away and forgetting to take my iPad I’ve really gotten behind with all what you guys are up to.    And I need to do my draw for my gadget giveaway which closed this last weekend.  And I want to make some culottes!!

Before I go…. the kitchen!  Isn’t it looking fabulous!?  Mum’s just on with choosing paint, flooring and fabric for the curtains!  I’ll have to invite you all round for tea when it’s finished!  You won’t mind will you mum!?
