STOP Everything for Cleo!

I couldn’t help myself.  I know I was supposed to be getting on with making blocks, especially stretchy ones, but I just needed a Cleo so badly after seeing them popping all over IG and the blogasphere!

And I had these shoes which I recently purchased, and had nothing to wear with them!  And a Cleo or 2 with opaque tights would be just perfect!

sewingcleo-tillyandthebuttons-pinaforedress-1211

So I whipped it up in an evening (I’d already traced off my size).

The only measurements you need to take into consideration are your hips and waist.  I’m a tilly size 5 on the hips (I like Tilly’s sizes – they make you measure.  As they are sized 1 to 8 you can’t just go with your ‘normal’ size and be lazy.

I would be a size 6 waist, but looking at the finished garment size I knew there should be enough ease in the size 5 for it to fit my waist.

And it did.  Perfect!  No muslin!!  Not even One!  Which is a miracle as I think nothing of having to do 2 or 3.

I started it at 4pm, had a short break to take H to KFC (so I did’t have to cook!) and had it finished by 9:30pm, except for the buttons.  That didn’t include adding any pockets, I’d cut them out but wasn’t sure initially which ones I wanted.

The pattern is for a confident beginner, and Tilly really does hold your hand through every step.  There are just a few things I would recommend which aren’t in the instructions.

Stay stitch all the curves front and back.

Block fuse the fabric before cutting out the facings:

If you’re not too hot as sewing button holes, stitch the straps in place, then stitch the button on top for fancy.  I pinned my straps in place and wore it around the house for an hour or 2 to make sure they were in the right place – and make sure you can get in on and off ok before you do this!!

I used a light weight stretch denim and made the longer version with a slit at the front.  Next time I would add a light weight interfacing to the seam allowance if in a medium wight fabric as the split looks a bit flimsy.

Other than that, I love it so much.  I’ve worn it out shopping with long boots and tights:

And today for the school run and a quick cuppa at cyber moms before I played golf:

I was instructed to do something with my hands.  I don’t think this is what cyber mom had in mind!

sewingcleo-tillyandthebuttons-pinaforedress-1214

Do you have a Cleo in your life yet?  It’s just so comfy, but if really needs pockets. I’m still not sure where to put them.  But I think my next one will have inseams pockets, as I like the unfussy looks.

Oh, before I go, you need to see the inside – I almost want to wear it inside out!

And the buttons…..I love these!  They were reclaimed from on an old skirt from years ago:

Have you thought of making a Cleo, or something similar?  I just had to when i saw how flattering they were on everyone, and I love it even more than anticipated!

#SundaySevens 81

It’s been a while since I shared any Happy Valley photos in my Sunday Sevens but here’s one taken only about 200 yards off the main road from Halifax to Hebden Bridge, only a couple of miles from town.  Such tranquility but close to civilisation fabric shops.

sundaysevens-1217

Here’s a screen shot of what I’m planning for Linda’s Designin’ December.  I’m thinking i could make a similar effect from my husbands tie collection – I’ve not told him yet!!  If you’ve not heard of it, click on the link and have a look.  It’s all about copying a designer garment.

sundaysevens-1218

Sue and I had our gym Christmas Do – we went into Leeds to see The Monty – it’s well worth a trip to see it if it goes to a theatre near you.  Afterwards we hit the German Market.

sundaysevens-1220

This arrived in the post.  I was totally baffled as I didn’t recall meeting a Sue at a table top sale in Hawes.  It turns out cyber mom did though!

sundaysevens-1221

A slight accident whilst attempting to multi talk – was it as bad as  you pictured Del!?  Luckily the coffee spilt away from my fabric.

sundaysevens-1222

Saturday I had an impromptu coffee with the lovely Karen from Wakey Makes, and she gave me this super duper fabric from Funki Fabrics. Thankyou!! xx  This will soon be very sweaty in the gym!

sundaysevens-1225

Saturday night we had our works Christmas party.  A few of had an early start in Wetherspoons before we met up with everyone else.  A Fab night, with a rather delicate day after.

sundaysevens-1223

Can you believe it – I’ve only got 7 photos!  If you don’t include the ‘feature’ photo – now that’s got to be a first!

#SundaySevens 80

The week kicked off with a night at the movies.  Not the real movies – that was the theme for this years “Welcome to Yorkshire’ White Rose Awards held at Harrogate show ground. There were about 1200 guests and it was a huge event.  I just wish I hadn’t have been running late as it would have been great to get some photos whilst everyone was mingling before they were seated.

sundaysevens-1191

The food was stunning…

sundaysevens-1190

And as you could probably have guessed my highlight was the dessert.

sundaysevens-1188

Back to each and a pub lunch in our local-ish pub.  H skipped dessert and had a hot chocolate instead.  I think it’s getting hard for him to look cool and have his photo taken in public!

sundaysevens-1187

My missing parcel arrived from Fabric Rehab.

sundaysevens-1185

My purchases from the knitting and stitching show. Can you believe no fabric!!

sundaysevens-1184

I also spent my £10 stitching santa allowance at the show.  Here is the ‘main pressies’….

sundaysevens-1183

Friday I had my first Christmas Dinner.  It wasn’t a christmas celebration – it was a ladies golf dinner but we had turkey and all the trimmings and Christmas pudding.

sundaysevens-1182

I’ve taken a few photos from here – the car park of our local co-op – when I’ve had an unexpected sunset.  This was so dramatic but the photo doesn’t quite catch it.

sundaysevens-1181

I feel i’ve just thrown this together in a bit of a rush, but it’s my first day off since Saturday and I’m due at the hair dressers in an hour, then off to see The Fully Monty at the Grand in Leeds.  Eeek!  Must dash!

Enjoy your week x

The Harrogate Knitting & Stitching Show and The #BVSEWALONG Afternoon Tea

I thought I’d share with you my whole day as those of you like me who have never been to anything like this will be wondering if you should make the journey and go to one near you (the show not the Tea Party – the Tea Party is a bonus!)

So how do you start your day if you’re going to be attending a Vintage Tea Party?

With your hair in rollers of course!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1181

(Excuse the bare back, at least it’s not the front!)

When I bought my ticket for the Tea Party a few weeks ago my initial plan was to go on my own.  But then I mentioned it to a Glen & Mags who I play golf with and they really wanted to go too so we all travelled together.

When we arrived we headed for a coffee first, there was a bit of queue, it was so busy, so be prepared to queue for the loo and refreshments if you’re heading there in the next 3 days.

There’s a few coffee stops dotted about but if your near the Royal Hall I’d recommend sitting in there to enjoy your cuppa and soak up your surroundings.  If your lucky like these 2 ladies you might find a seat in one of the boxes.

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1184

Unfortunately we didn’t so sat in the bottom on the large tables.  Everyone was so friendly – we got talking to some ladies who had travelled from Newcastle on a coach.

Here’s the first selfie of the day with Mags and Glen…..  all excited for what may lie ahead!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1185

If you wanted you could learn to knit whilst having a drink and make Christmas Stockings.

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1186

They were hanging on the tree….

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1187

There was even a lady in a white coat – she was the Yarn Doctor!  What a cool idea!  I think they should have them in all the Accident and Emergency Departments too!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1188

We stayed together for a while and then I had a wander on my own.  It would be hard to stay together in big groups, especially if you had different crafty hobbies.

I had a look around lots of the shops but i wasn’t really in the mood for buying fabric (no I’m not ill!!) – though you’ll be spoilt for choice if that’s what you are looking to buy.

There was so much to see and do without spending money, which I was surprised at if I’m honest.

This is a huge backdrop which was created the mark the release of the 5th series of a Game of Thrones. I should have taken a photo with someone in front of it so you could appreciate just how big it is.

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1189

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1190

These ladies were spinning yarn, and making it look really easy – she could even talk and take her eyes of what she was doing!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1193

There were beautiful garments and accessories which were like works of art:

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1194

And here’s where some of the classes were held.  I didn’t book on to any but I might do next year now I know what to expect.

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1195

On the wall were examples of what you could learn to make in some of the classes.

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1196

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1197

Out of everything that amazed me throughout the day this was the most stunning (in my opinion!)

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1192

Unfortunately my close up photo doesn’t show if off to its’ best, but each square below was fastened together to copy the photo above. And i think each square was made by different people.

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1191

The were lots of quilts to admire, and I’m really surprised I held off getting carried away and buying a load of jelly rolls or fat quarters to make something like this.

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1198

At the far end, after all the halls of stalls, and before the workshop area, you’ll find the world’s longest embroidery.

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1202

And you can add your name or whatever you’d like to it.

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1203

I couldn’t resist a little bit of embroidery!  I was still on my own here, so it was another chance to get chatting to lovely new crafty people.  I even got a sticker and a certificate – for sewing, not making friends!    And can you see I’m wearing my Sew Up North badge?!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1199

Here’s my little bit of handy work….. My skills weren’t adequate enough to add anything fancy – I’d have needed to google to do anything more than a simple back stitch!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1201

There were some amazing creations from local colleges on display….

And so many stalls to enjoy.  The lady in the blue dress was showing a customer how to spin the yarn!

Before long it was time for my highlight of the day… The Vintage Tea Party!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1211

I’d gone in jeans and boots so needed to change into my Vintage Vogue 9082

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1212

There were other ladies who were on their own and others with friends.  I sat with a lady called Hilary who had the most amazing outfit on. Also on our table was a lady called Claire and her daughter, and a midwife and a nurse (sorry I can’t remember your names ladies!).

It’s amazing how sewing brings people together.  We must have looked like we all came together as a group and that we’d know each other years as we all chatted none stop and had such a great time.

Sue, who’s the MD of Butterick, came and introduced herself to everyone.  She even spilled the beans as to next years theme but I’m afraid my lips are sealed, but I’m very excited and will definitely be attending this event next year – but it might be called something else!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1214

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1215

Call the midwife!!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1216

I’m a bit embarressed to have forgotten this ladies name, but I can say she’s very good at twirling in her Butterick 5813.

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1217

Thanks Claire for sending me the pic below… I can’t remember what we were laughing at here.

Hiliary is in the middle but unfortunately you can’t see her outfit.  Once the official pics are out I’ll add a link as she really did look stunning with matching bag and shoes.  She came over to Wendy (on the left) and me to chat and asked Wendy if she subscribed to Sew Today.  Her answer was “no I write for them!”  maybe that’s what we were laughing at, it was quite funny!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1224

There was lots of mingling and even though there was a professional photographer there, ladies didn’t mind posing for my little iPhone camera.

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1219

The moment when you see someone in the same frock as you!!

But it wasn’t an embarrassing moment like you’d get if you’d both bought them from Marks and Sparks!  They were thrilled to see another version of the same dress.s

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1220

And here they are with 2 ladies who are twins – by birth as well as by outfits!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1221

Everyone had made such a bit effort. I’m wishing now that I’d taken more photos but the official ones will be out soon I’m sure.

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1222

Do you recognise anyone on here……………I was excited to see myself on here!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1225

So all in all a fabulous day out!

If you get chance to go to the show, with or without an afternoon tea, I’d definitely recommend it.  Even if you go on your own, you won’t feel alone.  There’s lots of crafts to try your hand at and it doesn’t have to be an expensive day out – but I can’t promise that!

I’ll show you later the few things that I’ve bought – the main things are for my Stitching Santa recipitant.

We left the show about 5pm and the traffic was a little busy, so we had to stop for a pub tea on the way home!

knittingandstitchingshow-bvsewalong-1227

Are you planning on going to the show over the next 3 days?  If you are I’m sure you’ll have a fab time!

Have fun ladies!

A little update.  Claire who I met at the Afternoon Tea Party has kindly sent me some more photos to add to my post.  Thanks Claire x

Me and O – The Start of Something Marvellous!

Here’s a quickie (with quite a few piccies) about how me and my new assistant O are getting on.

Anyone who knows me in ‘real life’ will know I’ve a bit of a thing for instruction manuals.  It drives me bonkers to have something and not know how it works properly, and what all the different functions do.  (hence the hubby still can drive me crazy as his mum lost the manual I was supposed to get when we got married!)

So when O arrived I was super excited, had downloaded and read the manual more times than I could remember and felt fairly confident that I could jump in feet first and make something.

But I didn’t!

babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1156

Instead I cut some strips of fabric and started from the beginning of the instruction book and began working through the different stitches.

As I practiced each stitch I wrote on the fabric what the stitch was, but soon thought this could get a bit disorganised so stuck them onto paper using a regular glue stick.

babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1168babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1169babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1170babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1171babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1172babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1173babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1174

I was able to write notes on the paper if needed, the type of stitch and which page to find it on in the manual.

I tried different fabrics for different stitches.  It got me used to how to thread up the machine in no time.

Although I hadn’t worked through everything in the book I really wanted to get going and make something.  So on day 2 of owning O I made a Renfrew.  Something I’d made lots of in the past, so no fitting issues and no tracing patterns off.

I made it all in an afternoon. It took a bit longer than it would have using my old machine, but I was soooo pleased with my new make.   I nearly didn’t bother using my sewing machine at all, but decided to stitch in the neck band with a narrow zig zag then finish it off with the cover stitch.

Ta Dah………..!!

selfdraftedtop-learningtousemybabylock-1183selfdraftedtop-learningtousemybabylock-1182selfdraftedtop-learningtousemybabylock-1181

Next up was to ‘fix’ Sue’s dress  (if you follow my Sunday Sevens you’ll know what I’m talking about).  It had huge bat wing sleeves that needed to go as they were ridiculously unflattering. So the batwings were chopped off (which was a lot easier than getting ring of bingo wings!) and all that was needed was a simple rolled hem.   As I’d practice rolled hems I didn’t think it would be much of a job for O.

How wrong was I??!

babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1164

Luckily I had the wings which had been removed which I could practice on.

babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1165

And practice I did!

babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1166

I tried different rolled hems but found the same problem – all the stitches were coming away from the fabric.

babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1167

Eventually i had a brain wave and chose a fine needle.  Problem solved!

I was really careful when I was deciding how much to cut off as I didn’t want to have to remove any of the sequins or sew through them.

babylockovation-babylock-learningtousemybabylock-1163

After playing around with O for a couple more weeks I was able to change between coverstitch and overlock in 5 minutes or less.

So I decided to whip up another simple jersey top.  Hila had measured me up from top to bottom and I had a big sheet of my measurements so I could start to learn to make my own blocks.

Linda had recommended I buy Winifred Alrich’s book – Metric Pattern Cutting for Women, after seeing all the work I put in to the numerous muslins i had to make to get a good fit.  She assured me it would be much easier if I made my own patterns.  I downloaded the electronic version straight away to my kindle!

So the first one I tried from the book was an easy fitting jersey tee.  Making the block seemed to take less time than tracing off pattern pieces.  It was just like playing dot to dot on a bit sheet of blank paper.  I bought a cheap A1 flip pad from Staples, and keep it under the sofa in the lounge so it doesn’t get bent or creased.

I made a turtle neck top – I knew exactly what the neck circumference of my top was, subtracted 15% and added seam allowances – 3/8 ” – and it worked like magic!

I admit to sewing in the neck and the arms first with a basting stitch on my sewing machine just to check the fit, and also it was a bit tricky sewing the neck hole in the round and getting the stretching just right.

selfdraftedtop-learningtousemybabylock-1186

The top took me longer than I thought it would to sew up.  I struggled a bit with the fabric – it just didn’t feed smoothly through the machine at the beginning of the seams when overlocking.  It was quite a fine stretchy knit.  I even tried stitching a piece of elastic to use to help start it off.

selfdraftedtop-learningtousemybabylock-1187

I’ve put a piece of the fabric in my bag and I’m going to take it to the Babylock stand tomorrow when I go to the Knitting and Stitching show in Harrogate and hopefully I’ll find out where I’m going wrong.

I’d heard about hemming cuffs on the flat before stitching the side seams.  As I would have had to sew the sleeve hem, then change to overlock to sew the side seam, then back to coverlock to sew the bottom hem I decided to have a go at sewing the bottom hem on the flat and then join the side seams.  It worked a treat, and was much easier to press the front and back separately than any other T shirt hemming I’d done before.  After i stitched the side seams the overlocked seam allowance is just stitched down and secured with a few stitches on a sewing machine.

selfdraftedtop-learningtousemybabylock-1188

I’m really chuffed with my first attempt at fashion design pattern drafting, and can’t wait to make some more of these for winter.  I think I’m going to buy Tilly’s new pinafore pattern tomorrow at the show as these would look fab underneath it.  And I’ve got some grey denim which would be perfect!

selfdraftedtop-learningtousemybabylock-1184

Just to mention, the sleeves are 3/4 length on purpose. I’d have preferred full length but didn’t have enough fabric!

selfdraftedtop-learningtousemybabylock-1185

The fit is more relaxed than I thought it would be, but I think it’s due to the stretchiness of the fabric.

selfdraftedtop-learningtousemybabylock-1189

And look at it under my new jacket!!

b6390-sewingwithgertie-butterick-1131

As well as taking the print off my manual with all the heavy reading, I’ve found loads of help online too.

Babylock have their own chanel on You Tube HERE which I’ve referred to loads, and there’s also Sewing with Nancy which I’ve found really helpful.

Something else which I’ve found invaluable is a group on Facebook group called Coverstitch/Coverlock.  Its for owners of all Coverstitch brands and was recommended to me by Peggy from Bespokeability.  There’s questions being asked and answered all the time.  It’s been really informative as i’ve read the solutions to problems before I’ve encountered them!   It’s a closed group, and you need to request to join.

Next up is to make some active wear.  I really need some new sports bras but I think thats a bit adventurous at the minute.  I’ve already made the block for close fitting jersey wear with negative ease, so hopefully i’ll be able to make some gym tops fairly soon.

As much as I could waffle on, I won’t.  I need to get my frock and whatafvyer ready for the Big Vintage Sewalong’s afternoon tea party tomorrow!

Eeeek!  I’m just rather slightly giddy!!  Are you going?  Or are you going to the show?

It’s my first time going to anything like this and i’m not sure what to expect, except it’s likely I’ll be coming home with a few big bags all being well and an empty purse!

My First Pattern by Gertie – Butterick 6390

Back in September I attended my first proper meet up – Sewbrum.  I had an amazing day and met some fabulous ladies.  Sitting down for lunch outside a pub with lots of women I’d never met felt really strange, but it was stranger that in no time at all I felt like I’d know them all ages.

sewbrum2016-sewbrum-987

One lovely lady I got talking to was Lucy from Sew Essential. and not long after returning home she got in touch and asked if she could sponsor a post on my blog.  Could she!!  I was really excited, and it took ages for me to decide what to make.  I came up with a few ideas – I wanted to make a casual style jacket but in a dressy up style fabric.  I found Gertie’s close fitting button down jacket and thought it would be perfect for me as I’m short waisted and not very tall.

bu_6390_la

Lucy suggested their faux silk dupion.  I was sold!! It came it quite a few colours.  As I wanted my new jacket to be quite versatile and go with anything so I chose the gun metal grey.  The pattern in my size called for 2.2m if 115cm wide and 1.8m for 150cm wide.  They sent me 2m as this fabric measures 138cm across.

sundaysevens-1010

The jacket was only partially lined and as I’m trying to be in a bit of a stash bust phase I decided to find something in my stash to line it with.

This all happened in the run up to my birthday.  And if you remember I was looking into investing in a cover stitch machine as my hubby had generously offered to buy me one as we’d had to cancel my birthday weekend away.  Well, to cut a long story short, after a lot of research and a very informative chat with Angela (Lucy’s MIL) I only went a bought an Babylock Ovation from Sewessential!  So then it was really hard to get started on the jacket as I only wanted to sew with jersey fabric and try out my new toy on everything and anything stretchy.

I even tried to use it in the top stitching of the jacket….

b6390-sewingwithgertie-butterick-1102

I think you’ll agree that that was a bad move!  Luckily it didn’t leave any permanent marks on the fabric when I unpicked it.

The jacket was relatively straight forward.  I made a muslin which I’d definitley recommend as not only do you  get the fit right, it’s also a chance to practice piecing together the back.  The only adjustments I needed to make was to shorten the arm length by 1 inch and do a 1 inch big bicep adjustment.

It went together really easily.  My only hiccup was when I got a bit carried away with the heat setting when applying the interfacing.  I had a practice with some spare fabric and it seemed ok, but when I came to interface the front mid sections the fabric shrunk!  Not a lot but as the centre fronts of the jacket have built in facings and aren’t separate it distorted the fabric slightly.  It didn’t cause any problems sewing it as the faced parts were folded to the inside and the slight distortion isn’t noticeable, but it’s worth bearing in mind when using this fabric.  I measure the interfaced cuffs against the pattern pieces and needs to reduce my seams allowance by 1/8 inch.

So anyway, you don’t want to read about all the nitty gritty, I’ll do that in a separate post, including how I lined the sleeves – only the body is supposed to be lined.

I was so pleased and so giddy when I finished it I couldn’t wait until the next day for a photo shoot to here it is with my PJs straight after the last button was sewn on!

b6390-sewingwithgertie-butterick-1123

It’s first proper outing was last night.  I went to a black tie do and wore it with my Holly Jumpsuit that I made back in October.

I was really hoping to have a proper little photo shoot at the event but as anyone here in the UK knows we had horrendous rain yesterday.  I was stuck at a road traffic accident at work and was an hour late off which meant everything was a big rush, and everyone was being seated as we arrived so we didn’t get chance 😦

Tonight it’s had it’s second outing.  With jeans and a new self drafted top and it looked just as good casual as it did dressed up with heals and a jumpsuit.

As it’s a bit tricky so get good pics inside with a hubby that does’t quite grasp what a great blog photo is, and with me feeling all awkward (much easier with big camera and timer) I popped my new jacket on Gertrude and took some ‘proper’ photos.

And what about the buttons?? Those on IG will have seen these already.  I just can’t believe how well they go.  They’re from the swap table at Sewbrum – so a HUGE thankyou to whoever brought them to swap!

For the inside of the jacket I decided to go a bit quirky……

Here’s a close up in case you want to have a read of the lining!

b6390-sewingwithgertie-butterick-1144

How pleased am I with my new make??!!   It’s just got to be one of the best things I’ve made, I just love how it all worked out perfectly.  The fabric was a dream to work with (except with my too hot iron!), and it looks very silk like.  I pre washed it, it didn’t shrink, and it doesn’t crease.

I think I’ll be building my ‘going out wardrobe’ around this jacket as I really don’t want to take it off!

#SundaySevens 79

Hello Sunday Seveners!

I work either 2, 3, 4, or 5 10 yours shifts a week.  It averages out at 33 hours per week.  This week was a shocker as I had to work 5 shifts.  Luckily these weeks don’t happen too often and I somehow managed to cram in quite a bit to share with you.

Before starting work at 4pm on Monday I had a lovely hour with Hila and Eleanor in the Shuttle in Shipley.  The name kept popping up and Hila just HAD to pay a visit.  And like all fabric addicts good sewing friends do we went to keep her company.  I did have to make the obligatory purchase or 3!  The Shuttle isn’t online but see THIS website for reviews and where to find it.  It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re ever in the area, or not!

sundaysevens-1095-1

As soon as I got home from the Shuttle I dug out my rulers and set about making my first block.  I’d been wanted to get started for ages but needed measuring.  I took my tape measure to the Shuttle and Hila got it all done – thanks Hun, you’re a star!  the shop was really busy but no one batted an eyelid!

sundaysevens-1097-1

I also did a bit of tidying up and have started using the different sized IKEA bags to organise my bits and pieces.

sundaysevens-1096-1

Wednesday the hubby and I celebrated 20 years since our first date.  Unfortunately I was working but when I came in from work at 2am there was a bunch of flowers waiting for me – do you like the make shift vase?!

Thursday was cyber-pops birthday.  We all went to the Empire fish and chip restaurant in Wakefield.  Aren’t these just the poshest fish and chips you’ve ever seen?

sundaysevens-1099-1

Alfie, our very own star baker, made the birthday cake!

sundaysevens-1100-1

If you’ve not time to eat it there’s a drive through!!  That was the first time I’ve ever seen a fish and chips drive thru anywhere!

Friday we had quite a fall of snow.  This was in the morning, and at lunch time we had a couple more inches.  It was crazy as on Tuesday when I played golf (after 5 hours sleep!) it was unseasonably warm and for about an hour when the sun was out our coats were off and we played in shirt sleeves.

The hubby made tea tonight.  It doesn’t happen too often so I just had to take a photo!

sundaysevens-1105-1

I finally got a photo of Sue in the dress I altered for her.  She sent it to me at the end of the week, but I think next time I’m round at hers we’ll have a proper fashion shoot!

The feature pic at the top is adding the finishing touches to my Butterick 6390 jacket – adding the buttons!

This week has seen our first snow fall, which seems really strange after having such a mild few weeks.  We only had an inch or 2, but enough to cause chaos to the commuters.  Luckily I was tucked up in bed – I took the photo below when I returned home after my night shift.

I placed a couple of orders with Fabric Rehab.  The first one arrived, and after looking through it everything looked familiar, but only because I’d scrutinised the website when placing my order and nearly bought everything!! I couldn’t remember what I’d ordered but thought I’d ordered 3m of the top fabric to make cushions for the lounge.  There was only 1m so I checked my account. None of the other fabrics were mine!!  I got in touch with Fabric rehab and they were going to refund my money, but then a day later another customer got in touch as she had my parcel!

H and I called into Curry’s to look at TVs and ended up having a go at the virtual reality set up that was for sale.  The guy was fab, no hard sell and we both had a really long go.  At about £750 I don’t think we’ll be buying it!

H having a go…

Then we nipped into Pizza Express for tea.  I don’t mind the hubby being late home, it means me and H sneak off for a treat!

I’ve made a couple of blocks for ‘tealed with a kiss‘ – the next quilt that’s being made to raise money for ovarian cancer. Kate from Tall Tales from Chiconia is organising it.  It’s the same lady I made my ‘time for teal’ blocks if you remember.  This is the first block – it was only supposed to have one cross, but I went wrong and didn’t have another more of the cream backgground to had to do 2 small ones, but I’m really pleased with how it turned out.  This is before I’d finished trimming it.

There’s a challenge going on this month on instagram, and as part of it I posted this picture this week. It shows how to tidy up your straggly ends on your overlocking using a loop turner. I thought some of you might find it useful.

On Friday night we went to H’s cricket club presentation night.  He won the batting award for the under 15’s and also for the development team.  Proud mum!!  He also has won the batting award for the under 15’s in the league, but he’s not got that trophy yet.  I think he got 250 runs not out in the matches, where they have to retire on 30 (sorry for the gobbledygook if you don’t speak cricket!

A birthday treat arrived from across the pond!  Thanks Del xx

sundaysevens-1104

Saturday night we went to a charity night with an 80’s theme.  We only knew one other couple who were going so weren’t expecting to have such a good night, but it was fab, and I took advantage of the hubby in his dancing shoes!

Feature image at the top…my second package arrived from Fabric Rehab, this time it was mine!  This lot worked out about £10!! Bargain!

Stitching Santa

I’m starting to feel proper Christmassy now I’ve received my email telling me who my swap partner is!!  I’ve been having  a good look at her blog today and come up with a couple of ideas already.

This is the 3rd year that Sheila from Sewchet has organised the secret Stitching Santa and this year there’s a whopping 44 taking part.  I missed out the first year as I didn’t feel brave enough to join in, so last year what my first.  I was soooo lucky to have been the person who Sheila was creating a Santa parcel for.  I wrote a post HERE all about what I received from Sheila, and also what was in Corinne’s parcel from Appleby Makes.

I’m feeling a bit like a bingo caller – “all the 7s – Sunday Sevens – Seventy Seven”

I’m blaming Sew Up North (S.U.N.) for my lateness this week.  I know I have regular readers who watch out for my Sunday Sevens (that’s you Mom!), but the S.U.N. post just had to jump the queue, and I don’t think there’s any apologies needed.

So what else happened last week?

I started the week in true Thimbers style with cake.  You’ve seen these meringues before but not in the pink version.  Whitleys Garden Centre had a fire earlier in the year and has been shut for ages.  It has reopened with new, not sure if improved, but still lovely and huge meringues.   If you’re around Mirfield way on the run up to Christmas it’s worth a visit.  The decorations are to die for, they do a great afternoon tea, and Santa’s there too.  And there’s a great cafe.

sundaysevens-1051-1

I have to show you the inside too!

sundaysevens-1052-1

My sewing cave has had slight makeover in readiness for the new arrival.  I took this picture with the panoramic setting on my iPhone as it’s the only way with the room being so small.

sundaysevens-1053-1

Tuesday I should have played golf, and whilst i was going to be out my Babylock was being delivered to Cyber Moms.  I received a text from Cyber mom 20 minutes before I was due to leave for golf to say it had arrived.

Major isnic set in! What to do?

I rang my pals, cancelled my golf and stayed at home and played with my new toy!

sundaysevens-1054-1

The next morning was an early start at 5am, and the first frost of the winter for me.  I think I forgot to mention I’d gotten a new-to me car last month.  Not sure how it slipped through my Sunday Sevens, but after the Merc failed its MOT miserably I needed a new car.  It’s not as smart as my old merc but it’s got a big boot for the golf clubs, so what more could a girl ask for!?

sundaysevens-1055-1

Friday night we went to watch the Wedding Singer at Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield.  My nephew was playing the lead role, and we had a fab night!  It always amazes me how our family produced someone with such an amazing voice – well done sis’!

sundaysevens-1056-1

After I arrived home from S.U.N. there was a slight reality check as the penny was straight on and I had to make a HUGE pan of chilli to take to my friends who was having a little bonfire and fireworks party.

sundaysevens-1057-1

Most of us stayed in the garage and watched the fireworks from there, it was freeeeeezing!

sundaysevens-1058-1

I’ve been on with my sponsored blog post this week for Sew Essential.  It’s been quite hard to get motivated as I’ve been wanting to sew stretchy fabric with my new toy.  A big bicep adjustment was needed and an inch off the length off the length of the arms.  It’s all cut and I’m hoping to do a bit more tonight.

sundaysevens-1059-1

I’ve been on with a slight refashion too this week.  Here’s Sue in a dress she bought online.  It does nothing for her petite frame.  She looks like she could almost fly in this batwing top!  It’s all done, and I gave her it back this morning.  Hopefully I’ll have a photo to show you in next weeks Sunday Sevens.

sundaysevens-1060-1

Sunday was Lucy’s birthday – some of you will have met her on Saturday at the meet up. Alfie (the singer, Lucy’s brother) made her a gluten free birthday cake.

sundaysevens-1095

We all had tea at cyber moms and when we came to leave cyber mom had to stand on a little buffet so she could reach to give H a kiss!
