A Quick Polo Shirt Refashion

I think MeMadeMay spurs us all into action and opens our eyes to gaps in our wardrobe. Last week I was wondering what I could wear for golf, then I remembered a top the hubby had discarded and put aside for the charity bag.

It was kinda huge on me but I thought the collar the the zip opening didn’t look too big and once the sides were taken in it would still look in proportion.

I measured it and decided to take the side in for it to measure 40″. I measure 39″ so I thought with a little stretch in the fabric 1″ of ease would be enough.  I’m still now sure now if i remembered to include a seam allowance as the finished garment is a bit snug (though I could get off my butt and go measure it and find out!).

The marks drawn on were with a frixion pen.  I recently bought some felt tip style ones.  I’d always recommend testing to make sure the heat from the iron removes all marks before you go ahead and draw all over your fabric!

Once I’d sewn up the side I tried it on and drew roughly where I thought the shoulders should finish.  The curve where I’d already estimated where the armsyce should finish was way out.  I needed to use the original one, and if anything could have done with the opening 1/2 inch higher, so just be careful if you’re doing something similar – don’t get too scissor happy!

Once I’d cut off the excess on one shoulder I used the piece I’d removed as a guide as to what to cut the other side.

The length was obviously too long, and the existing hem was stitched with a facing on the back piece.  This was what I used to trim the arms. Unfortunately I removed the excess length after I’d reduced the side seams which meant my width at the bottom was about 4 inches shorter than it could have been.  So next time I’ll remove any excess width before I reduce the sides.

I cut strips of fabric for the binding 1 1/4 inches wide, single folded them, stitched with a regular stitch to the right side of the fabric, turned and coverstitched in place.  I didn’t have a matching thread for the pinky colour so used a contrasting thread the same as the cream.

I only had enough of the cream colour trim to use for the front of the top so joined a piece of the pink to make it long enough to go all the way around.

A bit wonky with the hem, and I’ve not gotten around to trimming off the excess fabric with my duck billed scissors.  But it’s tucked in so no one knows but me!

Hi Folks!

Gosh!  What’s happening to me!  This healthy active lifestyle is certainly getting in the way of me and my sewing machine.  And my blogging.  But behind the scenes I’m still snapping away at the picks and now I’m only ONE pound off my target weight I’m hoping to get back to sewing more, especially as I really need some new clothes.

I decided totally out of the blue to go for a run.  I’d not run for over a year so I was both surprised and pleased when I did 5K in 31 minutes and 2 seconds, beating my best park run time by 8 seconds! 🙂

One night last week I came across a road accident on my way home from work and stopped to help as it had just happened.  It was where the donkeys are that I’ve shown on previous SSs (ages ago).

Slimming…..in my first week I missed of my SS I lost 2 1/2 pounds and then this week another pound!!  That’s 18lbs since February and only 1 pound to target!

Simplicity 1783 – A Cynthia Rowley Pattern

I know there’s a lot of Cynthia Fans out there and I’m quickly becoming one!

Last year I made the top from this pattern, you might remember it as the ‘save all your kisses for me‘ top!

A few weeks ago I was looking to make a denim skirt for summer and stumbled across this pattern in my stash and thought this would be perfect.

I frivolously chopped my paper pattern!!  Shock! Horror!!  This is not something I would normally do, but I’m not planning on being a bigger size anytime soon so I thought what the heck!

It’s actually about a month or so since I finished this.  There’s not a lot to say about the construction except to was fairly straight forward, including the zip fly.

I changed the order of construction.  Instead of sewing the side seams then attaching the waist band, I completed the front (inc the fly) added the waist band, but not the facing.  Then I sewed up the side seams to get the fit spot on.  Then adjusted the waist facings and attached them.

From experience there’s nothing worse than attaching the waist band, and finishing off the top stitching etc only to find you’re unhappy with the fit.   I started sewing all my skirts, dresses and trousers this way after making my Yasmin Yoke Skirts as they is how they are sewn up.

The top is a save from last year.  The neckline just wasn’t right so I folded it over to the outside and stitched it down with the coverstitch and am really pleased it worked as I just love this fabric.

So not a lot else to say about the skirt, except there’ll be definitely more of these to be seen in the summer, once I get through my stash of jumpsuit patterns for #jumpingintojune !!

Me Made May Already!!

An hour and a half to me made may and I’ve not made my pledge yet.

#SundaySevens 97 – Sunshine Edition

It’s a double bill and there’s been lots going on, including my long awaited ladies trip to Portugal.  If you’ve never thought of playing golf, it’s worth learning to play just to come on our trip!

2 weeks ago H was on school holidays.  Here he is with cyber mom, she had to stand on a chair to give him a kiss and for a minute I thought she was going to fall off!  And look she’s wearing my favourite Coco that is now hers.

And then we all went to play golf. (us, not cyber mum!)  H played with the juniors in their comp and came 2nd and played 3 under his handicap – which is a first.  He was really pleased.

And then it was soon time for some last minute pampering before my holiday…nothing like a glamorous foils shot to keep it real!

If you’ve been following the Tour De Yorkshire this weekend and know where abouts I live you might have realised that it’s only been a couple of miles away, and there’s been bikes everywhere……..even in the local supermarket.

And then the 20th April arrived and we all met at the airport at 6am.

And guess what?!  I was 20 pounds lighter than I was a year ago when we all went away!

Our holiday was for 7 nights.  We played golf 5 times and each day had a colour or theme.

Our first day was a blue day………

Unfortunately I didn’t perform as well as I could have done and came last!  We all have holiday names, so from left to right we have Kizzy, Tiggles, Whiskey, Petra, Trixie, Misty and me – Taffy.  We’re named after pets we had as kids, and call ourselves Pussies.

So here’s what the pussy with the best and worst score had to wear for dinner when we went out that evening…

 

Luckily my score wasn’t the worst the following day, which was pink day.  Tiggles managed to get one point less than me…phew!

And then there was the black, red and white day, but only Trixie wore red.

And then the sensible ones had a day off, whilst the hard core golfers had an extra round.  Obviously I’m not hard core, but instead googled ‘fabric shops near me’ (I know I’m not on my own doing this!) and found one only a 15 minute walk away!

Helen and I bought a few bits of haberdashery and stroked a few balls of yarn.

Did I mention my healthy breakfasts?  Each day I had an omelette with cake for afters.  I usually wrapped some up to put in my golf bag for a lunchtime snack, but sometimes I ate it all before it got into my golf bag! Greedy pussy!!

Our 4th day of golf was a brightly coloured anything goes day!  One guy came up to us on the course and said we were the most colourful and best dressed 4 ball he had ever seen!

A little first aid was needed for Trixie….I wondered why they asked me to go on the trip! Luckily this was before we played and her feet weren’t too smelly!  (Sorry Trixie xx)

Did I mention that I had to wear the losers sash twice!?  Well I did and I wasn’t impressed, so on the night before our last round I took things easy, only had 3 glasses of wine and was asleep before 1am.  And guess what?  I won!!!!!!

The next day it was time for home……….here’s Tiggles and Taffy on their balcony all packed and ready for home, and feeling sad even though we’re smiling…

And just one more holiday pic before I move on.  Earlier I mentioned I’d lost 20 pounds since I went last year.  Here’s me last year and wearing the same top this year, not quite as snug! I’m so glad I joined slimming world, I feel fab and have never eaten so much. (but unfortunately not cake! except in Portugal!)

So then it was back home to the central heating and tonnes of washing.  H and hubby had been really good – my car had been washed, they’d kept the house tidy and the fridge was full of food!  I think I’ll go away more often!

I arrived home at 5:15pm, had a quick bite to eat, then dashed to parents evening (H’s teachers think he’s as wonderful as me!) and then dashed to watch H play cricket.  It was hail stoning as I left school, but somehow the storm managed to bypass the ground in Huddersfield were he was playing.

And then today I played in the Bradford and District Evening League Team Championship and we only went won!!  This league has been running since 1984 and we play other clubs throughout the summer.  At the start of the summer we have a team event and scores are combined.  This is only the second time in 33 years that our club has even won it so we were over the moon!!

Happy Easter from a wet and chilly Yorkshire!

Hope your tummy’s aren’t full to bursting from all the chocolate!  This is the first year I’ve not had an Easter Egg of my own, but I admit to helping H out just a little bit when he looked to be struggling with his.

On Monday we had a cool, dry start to the week and I managed to get H’s white’s washed and dried so they’re nice and fresh for the start of the cricket season.

Tuesday I threw a chunky chilli together and left it simmering in the slow cooker and went to play golf.  And I only went and won the competition!

Do you remember the Simplicity 1696 amazing fit trousers I made last year?  Well, they’re now golfing shorts to be worn in Portugal for my holiday this week!  They would be too short to wear at my home club but abroad the dress code is more relaxed.

On Wednesday my mum and I dropped H and his girlfriend at Flamingo Land and then had a day out round and about before picking them back up at tea time.  We met Bertie in a garden centre who was very chatty, especially when we left him – he didn’t like to be ignored.

We resisted all cafes and cake shops in Malton and was super prepared with our own lunch.  Unfortunately it was a bit too cold so we ate our picnic in the car.

And then the highlight of the day!

As Cathy from NanaCathyDotCom who won my recent Giveaway/Competition lives very close to Flamingo land I dropped her an email to see if she fancied meeting up for a coffee.  She did so we did just that and met up in Pickering!  We had a lovely hour chatting like old friends, AND resisted cake.  And she absolutely loved her goodie bag!

Remember my standby point in Elland at the side of the river?  The road it’s on is called Gas Works Lane and this old building used to be part of something to do with the old Gas Works.  I have a feeling it used to be a social club.  I took the picture the other day when stood by just to record what it’s like now and hope one day it will be renovated rather than demolished.

I fancied a change from an omelette so after dry frying some peppers, courgette and mushrooms I dropped a couple of eggs on top.  After cooking them for a few minutes on a gentle heat I finished them off under a hot grill.

Round the back of the ambulance station is Brighouse Library and a stunning blossom tree.  It really is in full bloom at the moment but the light doesn’t quite do it justice.

Today was supposed to be our first trip of the year to the coast with the jet ski.  The forecast was terrible so we changed our plans and headed to nearby Butterley Reservoir in Marsden, Huddersfield.

And now on to Slimming News.  I lost  1 1/2  pounds – that’s now 15 1/2 in total!  Mum gain 1/2 pound, and the hubby lost another pound.    So in total we’ve lost just this year almost 3 1/2 stone between us!

And now just a little recipe to share with you…..How to make a healthy dessert which is perfect for topping your favourite cheesecake base, or a meringue nest, or just have it on it’s own.

You will need for the topping:

Quark – for a dessert to serve 4 you will need a 500g tub (at least, more if you’ve can’t find your greedy switch to turn it off!!).  This can be found at most ‘big’ supermarkets.  I think just in the Uk – Del has not been able to find any in the U.S.

(Quark is a fat free soft cheese that is really versatile and can be used in sweet and savoury dishes.)

You will also need Begian or white chocolate options, or other low calorie chocolate drink to flavour the quark.

Fruit – I find raspberries work well with the white chocolate, and mandarin segments with the belgian chocolate.

  • Mix 3 teaspoons of Options to the Quark.  Add more according to your own taste.
  • Add roughly chopped fruit and mix.

Add to your favourite cheese cake base – for a totally unhealthy treat I used 8 digestive biscuits and 50g of melted butter.

Here’s the same topping added to meringue nests – this saves a huge amount of calories/syns/points depending which if any diet you’re following.  I also added some broken meringue to the topping.  Excuse H – he would’t stop eating for long enough for me to get a pic without him in it!

And if you just want a snack on the go (like I did at work last night) you can buy single sachets of options and add them directly to the tub of quark so long as you have an implement which will double up as a stirrer and a shovel.  Luckily I had a knife in my lunch bag otherwise I would have to use my pen or maybe a syringe!

I managed to mix a sachet of chocolate orange options just with the top half of the tub of Quark, and after eating that then mixed a sachet of mint chocolate options with the bottom half of the tub.  Absolutely yummy and I didn’t feel I’d missed out on the whole Easter Egg shebang one bit!

Hello!  These weeks are just flying by,  I can’t believe it’s nearly Easter.   I’m a bit late this week with my Sunday Sevens, I feel any later than Wednesday and I should add it to next week, so here goes before it’s too late!

 

Monday was a gorgeous start to the week with high temperatures and lots of sunshine.  My favourite stand by point is back open on Gas Works Lane, Elland Bridge.  This has been closed since the Boxing day floods of 2015 when the river behind came right up and over the wall and caused massive devastion in the Calder Valley.

I spent an hour (or 2) sorting some of my shoes out in the bottom of my wardrobe and taking photos for the ‘stylebook‘ app on my phone.  I’ve still to upload them to the app but my wardrobe is now much neater.  I even found a few pairs that I forgot I had!  As I wear steel toe cap boots for work my shoes tend to last forever and don’t get worn out so fast.  Here’s just a few from my screen short on my phone…..

Another evening stroll for the me and the hubby.  The houses on the right are where we live and we’re really lucky to have a the sound of bleating when we’re sat in the garden now the sheep are back in the field.

Sunday morning I thought I’d take advantage of the lovely weather and cycle to work.  BIG mistake!  It was only 4 degrees and bloody freezing!!!  But the sunrise was stunning and it did warm up a couple of degrees as the sun crept a little higher.

I thought I’d save the foodie photos till the end.

Sweet potato, parsnip and carrot soup whizzed up half chunky and half smooth.  No herbs added I just use chicken stock cubes.  Served with sharwoods noodles, chip cubes (boiled for 5 minutes then sprayed and popped in a hot oven for 20 minutes with some spam lite cut into cubes).  This dish when down a treat with the hubby and he is a huge spam fan and was fab for me as it was a super quick tea as I always have a big jug of fresh soup in the fridge.

I generally have a bag of grated white cabbage and carrots in the fridge to to make my own coleslaw with ridiculously light mayo as I need it.  It lasts about 4 or 5 days but I’ve usually used it up before then.

Leftover chilli with cauliflower rice and some coleslaw make a really quick meal at work.  For cauliflower rice whiz a cauli up in the food processor and then just warm it in the microwave.  This is really good if your trying to cut down on carbs.  (supermarkets sell it ready made if you don’t have a processor).

I’ve never really done a diet properly in the past, as in joining a club and having the support of all the other members and the consultant.  If you’re wondering if you should do it, I’d really recommend it Slimming World.  I don’t even feel like I’m on a proper diet as I’m never hungry.  It’s just got me motivated to get organised and have some structure to what I’m eating, and a lot more variety too.

And look……..my favourite Yasmin Yoke skirt doesn’t fit me any more!!  There’s too much top stitching to unpick and alter it.  I think it’ll be quicker to make a new one.

Well, I finally gotten round to doing my Carol Vorderman bit and added up the total mileage of how far everyone travelled to the #sewdowndewsbury meet up.  And I was absolutely flabbergasted!  Even before the 808 miles from Chris who came from Germany were added you guys travelled 1,111.2 miles!!!  So in total that’s……..

So the UK winner is Cathy from nanacathydotcom who guessed 1876, so she was only 43.2 miles under, and doesn’t live too far away herself so hopefully we’ll meet up at a future sewing gathering. Last year Sam won the competiton and this year she came, so you never know!

The international winner is Rachel, all the way from Malaysia, who blogs at SewSouthLondon. Rachel’s guess was only 54.8 over … 1974.

Weight loss update: I lost another 2 pounds, that’s 13 in total and leaves me only 6 pounds to target!  Mum put 1/2 pound on and thought it was an April fool but it wasn’t.  She’s back on track this week.  The hubby is still loosing weight steadingly and has lost a stone altogether, but as he doesn’t have an official weigh in it’s hard to know exactly what he’s lost.  He’s going in the right direction though.

My new favourite breakfast.

40g  of oats mixed with a sachet of options chocolate drink (or any low calories chocolate instant choc drink), then add a little boiling water to make a cheesecake style base.  Allow to cool.  Add 150g of 0% fat greek yoghurt, followed by your choice of fresh or frozen berries.  Leave in the fridge overnight.

Another alternative which I’ve since made and prefer, is adding 1/2 the sachet of options to the oats then add the water as above.  Then instead of using greek yoghurt use Quark and added the other half of the options sachet to make it chocolate flavour, and then add fresh raspberries.  (Quark for those who’ve not heard of it is a o% fat cream cheese that’s full of protein).

Home made chocolate orange cheesecake.

The base wasn’t healthy at all – butter and digestive biscuits.  But the topping was quark, chocolate options, chopped up mandarins, and finished with grated dairy milk and an orange segment.

Weight loss update: I lost another 1 1/2 pounds, that’s 11 pounds in total!  Mum lost 2 1/2 and got her 1 stone award! The hubby lost another one and it’s really starting to show!

Weight loss update: I lost another 1 1/2 pounds, that’s 9 1/2 in total and leaves me 9 1/2 to target!  Mum put 1/2 on and the hubby put one on too, but we’re all geared up for a fab week and the pounds will be melting off!  I’m cutting down on my coffee as I do drink an awful lot which really makes my milk intake too high, and I’m going to try to have a 3 pound loss this week!! …I’m dreaming of playsuits for Jumping Into June!!
